Several Princess Margaret Counterattack students visited Uplands and West Bench schools to work
with younger students on the Think of Me Brown Bag Campaign. This program has young students
color Liquor Store bags with the theme “Think of Me, Please Don’t Drink and Drive”. The bags are
returned to the store and people receive their alcohol purchases in one of the bags. Parkway and
Wiltse also participated. Parkway was featured in the Western News Advertiser in a story by Brian
Johnson. This is a great program and well received by all. The older students enjoyed working with the
elementary students. Princess Margaret has an active Counterattack Program, holding several
successful events over the years. As well as the Think of Me Program, students also hosted a seatbelt
check at the school.

Congratulations to Ms. Rose and her grade four class for organizing a bake sale to raise money for the
S.P.C.A. The students had a great time preparing goodies for the sale, and all classes had an
opportunity to come down and buy some delicious goodies. In all, Ms. Rose's class raised just over
$250 to donate to the local animal shelter.

Once again, Ms. Forsyth worked her magic with the intermediate students as she held her annual
Christmas concert with her production of "Once on a Housetop”. The concert played to a full audience
at the Cleland Theatre. As well, there were two other performances, a school dress rehearsal, and
another dress rehearsal at the Cleland Theatre. Thanks to parents for their support in attending, our
staff for always stepping up to the plate with background work and preparation, and students for doing
an outstanding job in making the performance a success. Again, a special thanks to Ms. Forsyth for
her personal commitment in providing an excellent concert each and every year.

Health Association for their "4th Annual Poster Contest" in
recognition of World Mental Health Day. All middle and secondary

theme of the poster contest was "Mental and Physical Health
Across the Life Span”.

Lisa Cunnian's and Julie Cornett-Ching's French Immersion 7
classes recently sponsored two needy KVR families as a "Spirit of
Christmas" activity. Julie has done this activity in previous years and has always received a positive
response from parents and students. Lisa and Julie told their classes about the idea and they were very
excited. Letters went home to parents and before too long donations came flooding in. One day after
school, a group of volunteer students, Lisa, and Julie went shopping for the family's wish list plus a food
hamper. The next day we spent recess and lunch wrapping the gifts. Everyone was more than happy
to donate their time to help out two local families in need. We have since received letters from parents
saying what a great activity this was.

NARAMATA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
•
Creating Walls of Local History: Naramata Elementary School, through sponsorship from the Naramata
Recreation Commission, enlisted the artistic services of Penticton Artist Glenn Clark. Three murals will
adorn the hallways of Naramata to help mark the community's Centennial in 2007. The murals depict
three aspects of Naramata's past and present: Maypole dancing past and present, the SS Naramata
tugboat breaking the ice on Okanagan Lake for the SS Sicamous, and the new children's slide at
Manitou Park. Glenn received assistance from the 100+ students who each painted one of the 111
panels which make up the murals.

All grade four students took part in skating lessons based on the Premier’s Award Ice Skating
curriculum. All students completed the course and were awarded a badge indicating the level of
achievement that they reached. Seven students completed the Blue Level, the highest available.
Congratulations to all of the students in the program.
Students at Parkway have been learning all about ‘empathy’, and they were able to demonstrate
empathy in action when they participated in Operation Christmas Child once again this year. It was
wonderful to see the outpouring of support from Parkway students and their families for this special
project. Fifty three boxes were filled to the brim and sent off to children around the world, many of
whom would not be receiving any other gifts at Christmas. Many thanks to all who supported this
project, and a special thanks to Tim Horton’s, who supplied us with boxes and arranged for our parcels
to be picked up and sent overseas. Operation Christmas Child was a wonderful way for students to
experience the season of giving and hope.
The Book Fair raised $1,488.78 to buy books for the school library. Thanks to the many volunteers who
helped with the Book Fair this year: Mrs. Skrypiczajko, Mrs. Sinclair, Mrs. Owen, Mrs. Koster, Mrs.
Stadnyk, Mrs. Ramsay, Allison Brooks, Krista MacLean, Brandon Wilson, Megan Schmidt and Mr.
Graham. The Book Fair Door prize of $25.00 was won by Jake Turnbull in Mrs. Tebbutt’s room. His
class also won $25.00 for their classroom library.
The Candy Cane Contest was won by Taylor Schyrbiak. Her guess of 284 was only two candy canes
short of the 286 candy canes that were actually in the jar. The proceeds of this contest bought two
books for us to send to Keith Koponyas in the hospital in Vancouver, as well as three books for the
school library.
The grade four and five students (with help from a few grade threes) performed in a very successful
winter performance, The Perfect Holiday Song Search. Students from all intermediate classes learned
songs, lines, technical matters and how to have a good time.
Students from all grades contributed to a full barrel of canned food goods that were donated to the
Salvation Army Food Bank. Great thanks were given from the food bank.
Two classes of grade one students performed songs, riddles and poems for their parents and
gatherings at retirement lodges. Students performed like longtime professionals. Lots of reading went
into the preparation.
Student achievement in literacy done on a sample of seven classes (149 students) throughout the
grade levels showed only 16 students Not Yet Meeting Expectations in Reading while 29 students were
Exceeding Expectations in Reading during fall assessments. Expectations will change over the course
of the year but this is a very encouraging result for this time of the year.
