Sagemcom
and the Better Future Supplier Forum
As a long-time member of BT’s Better Future Supplier Forum
(BFSF), Sagemcom is an excellent example of how a supplier’s
sustainability improvement can not only help to deliver BT’s
net positive ambition, but also represent success for BT and
the supplier alike.
A valued supplier of consumer products, Sagemcom was one
of the first companies to be invited to join the BFSF in 2012.
The initial feedback was positive: assessments showed that
this was a highly capable technical company, particularly in
the environmental management area. To encourage further
improvement, the BFSF provided Sagemcom with suggestions
to help them to engage on sustainable innovation.
“We have been impressed
by the progress and
innovation demonstrated
by Sagemcom since
becoming members
of BT’s Better Future
Supplier Forum”.
Gabriellé Giner, BT
With characteristic efficiency and enthusiasm, Sagemcom made rapid and long-lasting
improvements both to its BFSF assessment score and to its operations. Recognising that
other customers were likely to catch up with BT, Sagemcom increased the capability and
capacity of its team to meet both BT’s current needs and those of its other customers in
the future – a forward-thinking action which continues to yield results today.
Similarly, Sagemcom benefits from a long-standing programme of engagement with
their key suppliers and manufacturing facilities. Focussed on driving carbon reduction
and encouraging CSR improvements, this programme has included a number of effective
initiatives: the implementation of ISO 50001 in Sagemcom’s manufacturing facilities
has identified potential to reduce energy consumption by 20%; the deployment of
space-efficient, reusable packaging has allowed key suppliers to significantly increase the
number of units per package, whilst the increased use of train transportation has reduced
Sagemcom’s reliance on air freight. Through measures like these, Sagemcom’s programme
has not only contributed to BT’s 3:1 “net good” goal, but has also reduced risk and
increased stability and efficiency in Sagemcom’s supply chain.
Key milestones:
• Implementation of ISO 50001
reduced energy consumption
by 20%
• Carefully designed reusable
packaging has meant
Sagemcom’s suppliers are able
to transport more components
per load
• Increase in use of train
transportation reduced
reliance on air freight
• The design of energy efficient BT
Home Hub 5 saved over 13,000
tonnes of carbon emissions
• The design of BT Home Hub 5’s
packaging can fit through most
letterboxes
• The Home Hub won the 2013
BT Better Future Supplier
Forum Consumer Game
Changing Challenge
“The collaboration with BT has helped
to drive the use of recycled plastics in
Sagemcom’s operations and products.
The BFSF initiative has helped to further
enhance Circular Economy principles within
Sagemcom creating new possibilities and
solutions for our customers.”
Florian Tremblay, CSR expert at Sagecom
Environmentally friendly design has also been a particularly strong area for Sagemcom
over the past four years. Through its rigorous use of eco-design principles, Sagemcom
has initiated and participated in the development of designs with customer tangible
benefits. Notably, Sagemcom collaborated with BT on the design of the Home Hub
5, the energy efficient router which saves over 13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
As part of this project, Sagemcom delivered a packaging design that can fit through
most letterboxes to the specification and design by The Alloy (BT’s design agency) - an
innovation essential both to BT’s business model and to the end customer’s experience.
Further to this, Sagemcom used its eco-design capabilities to design an energy efficient
home hub, an effort which won 2013’s Game Changing Challenge (GCC). Having
participated in 2015’s recycled plastics trial, Sagemcom has been invited to collaborate
with BT to investigate ways of using recycled ABS in future products to further improve
the environmental credentials of BT products.
Projects like these demonstrate that the BFSF has helped to draw BT and Sagemcom
together into a closer, more efficient and more innovative partnership. With Sagemcom
recently selected to supply the Home Hub 6, it seems that this trend is set to continue
into 2016 and beyond.
