President’s Message: Cure for Winter Doldrums
ICA President Julie Simanski
Like many of you, I am eager for this winter to end. It’s too cold, too
snowy, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Luckily, I have a
cure for you. Let’s start thinking about the ICA Fall Conference. It will
be an especially exciting year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. This
time of year brings together the warmth of friendship with colleagues
from around the state and beyond, the brightness of intellectual
discussion, and we shine a light on the some of our most dedicated and outstanding students and fellow professionals.
The conference is only as good as its participants and panelists, so I challenge you to start
thinking of ways to contribute your ideas to the 50th anniversary convention under the theme,
“Bridging Disciplines, Differences, and Decades.” Furthermore, ICA is offering a special
anniversary deal to bring back former members as well as enticing new members to join our
organization. A $50 rate will include banquet, registration, and evening reception. More
specific details about lodging and dates are included within the newsletter.
Please also consider nominating someone for one of our many awards. Nomination deadlines
for these awards seem to creep up on us during one the busiest times of the year, but if you
start thinking about it now, maybe you can ease the stress by nominating early. We recognize
the Outstanding Adjunct and New Teacher. We also have a student paper competition. As you
continue to grade your students’ papers over the year, start thinking about potential papers that
you believe merit recognition. The deadlines and requirements for all of these awards are also
included within the newsletter.
One of our most prominent awards is the Citation Award. This honors those individuals that
have given notable contributions to the organization. We are very proud to announce Melissa
Beall as the 2014 Citation Award recipient. Over the years, she has demonstrated leadership in
many capacities within ICA. We are very appreciative of her involvement and efforts.
I’m hopeful by the time you are reading this, we’ve moved on to warmer weather and a slightly
greener ambiance. Good luck with your semester endeavors and keep thinking about how
you or your colleagues can be more involved in ICA: propose a panel, recruit a new member,
nominate a colleague, acknowledge a student, or just simply mark your calendars for September
19 & 20 at DMACC!
Best wishes!

50th Anniversary Conference
Bridging Disciplines/
Differences/Decades
The 50th Anniversary of ICA is a time
for celebrating the organization and
our discipline. The conference will
be full of opportunities to celebrate
including a reception, panels looking
back and looking forward, and a special $50 registration package you can
read more about below. ICA’s 50th Anniversary presents an opportunity to
look back on five decades to celebrate
the longevity and contributions of the
organization. One strength of ICA
is bringing together educators from
many types of institutions from K-12,
to community colleges, colleges and
universities. Bridging the differences
of the types of institutions we teach
at by the common discipline helps us
learn from each other about what students have learned and are learning.
Communication as a discipline allows
a variety of scholarship and teaching
that we will celebrate at our 50th conference.
The 2014 ICA Convention will be held
September 19-20 at the campus of
Des Moines Area Community College
(DMACC) in Ankeny.
Panel and paper submissions due May
20--We encourage a variety of submissions, but particularly panel and paper
submissions on the conference theme:
How do we sustain our place in education at all levels by building bridges
with other disciplines through collaborative teaching and research? With
the range of teaching and scholarship
within the communication discipline,
how do we remain unique and distinct?
How has our teaching changed in particular courses through the decades,
such as Interpersonal Communication,
Public Address, Organization Communication, etc.? Are there best practices
in using technology in teaching, or in
how we teach differently now then 50

And The Winner Is…
by Gayle Pohl
Each year the Iowa Communication Association presents to a worthy member The Iowa Communication Association Citation Award. This award “is given each year to a recipient that has consistently demonstrated exceptional service to the communication and/or performing arts in Iowa
over an extended period of time. It is the highest award the ICA can bestow.”
And the 2014 award is presented to Dr. Melissa Beall.
Dr. Beall is a Professor at the University of Northern Iowa in the Department of Communication
Studies, but is known worldwide. She has presented over 600 workshops, convention presentaMelissa Beall
tions, and keynote speeches throughout the globe. Dr. Beall is best known, though, for her student-teacher interactions and her diligence in pursuing and enhancing the teaching-learning process. She quickly discovered that the primary component in improving these vital interactions is listening so much of her research centers on
listening and its cognitive components. Students race to enroll in her classes and extoll the value of her pearls of wisdom.
The list of state, regional nation and international awards that Dr. Beall has won is lengthy. She was named recipient of
the Iowa Board of Regents Faculty Excellence Award in 2008, received the President’s Award, International Listening
Association Award multiple times (2002, 2003, 2007, 2012), President’s Award, World Communication Association (2005,
2008, 2010) and the President’s Award, Pacific and Asian Communication Association (2004 and 2005). In 2012 Dr.
Beall was inducted in to the Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame, an honor granted to very few. In
2008, Beall was inducted in to the International Listening Hall of Fame.
Dr. Beall has been a member of the Iowa Communication Association (ICA) since 1984 when she presented her first
paper. Since that time she has held numerous offices from President of the association to president-elect, editorial review
board member, reviewer, and first delegate. Beall has been the ICA representative to multiple other associations such
as the Iowa Alliance for the Arts in Education, National Communication Association, Central States Communication
Association (CSCA), and States Advisory Committee. She was guest co-editor with Mary Bozik of the Iowa Journal of
Communication when it first won the CSCA Best Journal award. Beall was again editor for a year that included a special
edition on communication and social media. Dr. Beall also presents paper and panels that chosen as Blue Ribbon panels
for the Central States Communication Association convention.
Dr. Melissa Beall is a colleague, researcher, supporter and friend to any person who seeks her out. It does not matter if
you are faculty, student, or janitor. If you need “Doc,” she is there for you. It matters not what the topic is, if she can
help she does. But, first she listens.
The Iowa Communication Association is very proud and honored to present the Citation Award to the most deserving
and most humble…Dr. Melissa Beall
Duncan named Teaching Consultant at IWCC
by Nicole Juranek
Elizabeth Duncan has taken on a new role at Iowa Western Community College (IWCC), while
still maintaining her effective presence in the classroom. She was nominated by peers to serve as
one of three Teaching Consultants on the campus. The mission of the Teaching Consultant is to
facilitate the enhancement of teaching and learning at Iowa Western Community College.
The Teaching Consultant position is primarily one of providing feedback, observations, and
suggestions for the participants. It is in no way to be judgmental or evaluative. The Teaching
Consultant will not be perceived as the “expert” who offers solutions to teaching problems, but as
a facilitator for discourse about teaching and learning. Feedback for the participant could include,
but is not limited to, such items as classroom management, effectiveness of lectures or other

methodology, observations about the application of technology, comments on teaching aids used or the syllabi involved,
or many other things.

Juranek, Richter receive Excellence Award
John E. and Suanne D. Roueche, leaders in the community college field and early proponents of the idea that teachers have
major responsibility for how well students perform in the classroom, have been partners and friends of the League for
Innovation in the Community College for over thirty-five years. What began as a working relationship with the founders
of the League has evolved into a full-fledged partnership through collaborative efforts on projects of mutual interest and
national concern.
In recognition of the long tradition of excellence in community college teaching and leadership, the League established
the John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards (www.league.org/exawards) in 2012. These awards are open to League
Alliance member institutions to celebrate outstanding contributions and leadership by community college faculty and staff.
Recipients are recognized in a series of activities and promotions, and honored at special events at the League’s Innovations

Give your students an EDGE
in the job market!
by Judy Vogel
ICA Recognition of Achievement in Speech
Communication gives students an edge when applying
for a job. Employers look for candidates who have strong
communication skills, and being the recipient of the ICA
Recognition catches employers’ attention. Having the
ICA Recognition on their resumes helps gives students
an edge in a very competitive job market.
Students at 2-year institutions must take nine credits
of speech or approved speech-related courses, earn a
3.25 g.p.a. in those courses, and earn a 3.0 g.p.a. overall.
Students at 4-year institutions must take 18 credits, earn
a 3.25 g.p.a. in those courses, and earn a 3.0 g.p.a. overall.
There is no fee for the student to earn the Recognition.
All recipients’ names are posted on the ICA website.
Faculty at each institution can decide which courses
would be accepted and can decide how their institution
wants to recognize the recipients. Students from other
states can earn the ICA Recognition as long as a faculty
member from the institution is a member of ICA. An
ICA template is available for certificates. Recipients’
names should be reported to the Executive Secretary and
to the Webmaster.
Schools who currently present the ICA Recognition
are DMACC, IWCC, Central, Luther, Westminster,
and Buena Vista. Questions on the Recognition can be
directed to Judy Vogel, javogel@dmacc.edu.

ICA Partners with IAAE
by Sarah Schaefer
The Iowa Communication Association is continuing our
commitment to support arts education in Iowa by partnering with Iowa Alliance for Arts Education to advocate for
arts education and to support new teachers in the arts.
On January 29th leaders from across the state joined in
the Arts Education Day at the Legislature. Internationally
known opera star Simon Estes and IAAE Executive Director Leon Kuehner testified before the Senate Education
Committee, along about the importance of a balanced curriculum that includes the arts.
Larry Brandstetter, the ICA member representative at the
event, was pleased with the way that the information was
received. He said, “The only objection we heard was from
some who are opposed to the State of Iowa determining
what should be listed as ‘Core’ subjects.” The legislature will
take up the issue later this session. It is important that ICA
members to talk to our Legislators about inclusion of art,
theatre and music in code as it pertains to the Iowa Core.
In order to offer strong programs to our students, there is
a need to have highly qualified teachers in our classrooms.
Last summer speech and theatre educators helped introduce
the purposed curriculum in session held across the state
through the local AEA’s. In the future, the Iowa Communication Associate will continue to offer support for Theatre/
Speech educators in the state by facilitating the Arts Educator Mentor Program. Support is offered for new teachers
in the Theatre/Speech classroom by experienced teachers.
Please keep this program in mind as you work with pre-service and new teachers. Also, consider volunteering to be a
mentor for the program. Contact Sarah Schaefer at Waukee Middle School at sschaefer@waukeeschools.org with
questions or names of possible participants.

Women’s Conference at Westminster College
by Cinnamon Brown
The third annual Westminster Women’s Conference took place on March 13. Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the many contributions of women in every realm of society. Starting in 1911, people throughout the world began to
highlight the trials and triumphs of women on International Women’s Day, which now falls annually on March 8. It was
not until 1987 that Congress designated an entire month (March) to celebrating women’s history in the United States. The
annual Women’s Conference at Westminster College (MO) began in 2012 when Fulbright Robertson Fellow Amy Blakeway sponsored an event to celebrate Women’s History Month on campus. The conference originally sought to highlight
research conducted by faculty in the areas of women and gender. As the conference has grown, Dr. Blakeway’s original
vision was enhanced by including research conducted by students. Since people can celebrate women in different ways,
the Women’s Conference also features artistic performances that illustrate the power, strength, and experiences of women
throughout the world.
This year’s conference focused on the theme “Sisterhood is Global,” to celebrate women throughout the world and their
common bonds of strength and power with presentations that addressed everything from women in Jazz to the effects of
social media on current Women’s Rights Movements in several countries. Other performances included singing, poetry,
scenes from Trojan Women and the Vagina Monologues, as well as an international fashion show.
BVU’s Final Theatre Show of the Season
Buena Vista University Theatre presents “Three Sisters,” April 23-26 in Anderson Auditorium in the Harold Walter Siebens
Forum. Irina, Olga and Masha long to return to Moscow where they spent their childhood, but somehow time consumes
desire while life is being lived. Chekhov’s examination of desire, ennui, and inertia is as relevant now as it was over 100
years ago.
BVU Students Cruise Disney Magic
For several years, BVU’s Digital Media faculty member Jerry Johnson and Management/Finance Professor Henry Hardt
have teamed up to show students the behind the scenes workings of various aspects of Disney during the January Interim
Session. During January, the group was on a four-day cruise aboard the Disney Magic and had opportunity to work with
and hear from Jim Korkis. Korkis has done similar presentations during three other cruises for the Disney Company, on
the Magic and on its sister ship the Disney Wonder. Korkis has worked with BVU for four years. On this latest cruise with
Buena Vista students aboard the Magic, the students had one master class each morning after breakfast and then were
allowed to enjoy the ship until dinner, when they all gathered to pepper Jim with questions. The students kept individual
journals of their trip and were required to locate information including who is the godmother of the Disney Magic, and
examples of outstanding guest service and storytelling that demonstrates the cruising brand and the Disney brand.
BVU’s Digital Media Program Wins Awards
Buena Vista University media organizations KBVU radio, UCN cable, and The Tack, the on-line newspaper, received multiple awards from the Iowa College Media Associations (ICMAs) awards ceremony held on Feb. 7 in Des Moines. Buena
Vista University was presented with the 2013 Multi-Media Organization of the Year Award for their Tack Online. They
also won this award last year.
BVU Senior Capstone Students Selected to Present at CSCA
Undergraduate Honors Conference
BVU students Faith Prichard, Kadie Dennison, Caitlin Hoffman, Halry Jo Henrichs and Hannah Puderbaugh presented
“Using Communication Theory to Elevate Our Understanding of Communication Competence in Various Contexts—
in Presidential Rhetoric, Relational Development, Undergraduate Leadership, Age-Gap Relational Maintenance, and
Cultural Heritage” April 5 at the CSCA Undergraduate Honors Conference. Elizabeth Lamoureux served as supervising
