Symposium on Responsible Fisheries:
Introducing Keynote Speaker Dr. Yasuhisa Kato
Dr. Kato is a graduate of Hokkaido University, majoring in population dynamics. He is now serving at the
Southeast Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) as a special adviser dispatched by the Japan
International Corporation (JICA) and engaged in the field of socio-economics of fisheries.
However, before joining SEAFDEC he had a variety of experiences in international fisheries affairs. He
was once the president of Overseas Agro-fisheries Consulting Company (OAFIC), one of Japan’s leading
fisheries consulting companies. Thereafter, he served in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of
the United Nations as Director of the Policy and Planning Division. SEAFDEC serves all Southeast Asian
countries within ASEAN, to promote the development of national economies at the regional level.
SEAFDEC is in charge of ASEAN’s regional fisheries development efforts.
