Physical Therapy Student Objectives in Adult Acute Care
1. Time permitting, observe at least ½ day with OT/SLP (students in all areas).
2. Will be able to perform an evaluation and/or treatment by mid-term with
appropriate documentation.
3. Students on acute VUH rotation will experience the following areas:
MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit)
SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit)
Neurology and Neurosurgery (including Neuro Intensive Care Unit)
CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) and Cardiology/CT surgery
Myelosuppression Unit (Oncology)
General Medicine
Burn Unit
Post-Surgical Step-down Units
Trauma Unit
Renal/Dialysis Unit
4. Students on the acute MCN rotation will experience the following areas:
Orthopaedics
General Medicine
Post-Surgical
5. Evaluate and treat patients with the following disorders (among others):
Trauma including TBI, SCI
Burns
DM
CABG/Myocardial Infarction
Liver/Heart/Lung/Kidney Transplants
Amputees
Failure to Thrive
Post-abdominal surgery
HIV
COPD/Emphysema
Cancer
Orthopaedics and total joints
Pneumonia
CVA
Multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre, AIDP/CIDP
6. Demonstrate the ability to supervise PTAs and technicians as appropriate.
7. Present an in-service to PT staff. Topic to be determined by CI and student.
