Bauman Guests: Dean, Farzad Moussavi and Associate Dean, Leslie Wilson The CBA Faculty Council met in CBB 319 at 3:30 p.m. on April 2, 2008. Chair, Rex Karsten opened the meeting by asking for a motion to approve the minutes of the March 10 meeting. T. McAdams moved the minutes be approved and J. Smith seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously passed. R. Karsten recognized G. Smith who shared with the council the fact that a couple of community colleges had placed advertisements in the Northern Iowan promoting their minimester courses. G. Smith wanted the faculty to be aware of our competition. R. Karsten asked Dean Moussavi to speak to the issue of differential tuition which was raised at the last meeting. Dean Moussavi provided the following background. Ever since he has been dean, he has consistently argued against the across-the-board approach to addressing budget cuts and for a strategic approach to absorbing cuts in the university budget. Our new president recognizes that cutting the budget across the board is not the way to go and he also recognizes the CBA has a legitimate claim to additional funding. Since the President and Provost recognize the CBA’s need for additional funding and the University does not have any other source to meet the need, they have decided to authorize us to pursue a request for differential tuition for business courses. The University of Iowa’s College of Business will charge each business major an additional $750 per semester. Iowa State University’s Business College is requesting from the Board of Regents that they be allowed to charge an additional $65 per student credit hour for upper division business courses. If the CBA is successful in obtaining differential tuition, it could be used for: o new faculty (Western Kentucky, a recently reaccredited school similar enough to use as benchmark, has 50% more faculty than we do but we have 50% more students. That is how wide the gap is between our current teaching capacity and ideal capacity) o improved student services (advising, career services, etc.) o technology o facilities upkeep o improve students’ professional skills (e.g., writing center) o scholarships Discussion ensued. J. Smith moved to approve the principle of the idea of differential tuition for business courses. The motion was made with the understanding that there will be a committee to work with the Deans in developing a special proposal to further investigate and determine the rate increase and to whom it will apply. The proposal shall then come back to the Faculty Council for approval. G. Smith seconded the motion. The motion carried with D. Hakes and S. Amin abstaining. J. Smith, G. Smith and R. Followill will serve on the committee to develop a differential tuition proposal. The Departments of Marketing and Economics may appoint a representative to serve on the committee, as well. Linda Corbin asked the Council if they would support a plan to offer a no credit orientation course for new freshmen business majors. The course would have the potential to: improve CBA advising services using limited funding, (group advising) be used as a springboard into the sophomore professional skills program and integrate assessment into the program The content would include an orientation to the College of Business as well as an orientation to becoming a UNI Business Professional. The course would be taught by the CBA professional advisors with course materials to be developed this summer. The Faculty Council approved the concept and agreed that it would be a good experimental course for freshmen. It was also suggested that a similar course be offered to transfer students. Linda said that the advisors would like to start with freshmen and see how that transpires before working on a course for transfer students. The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Corbin, Secretary pro tem
