Minutes of last teleconference held on 12th July 2012

Periodic report
a) WP1 – Developing the workforce. GM has sent the report for Tanzania; details for Malawi
are being added
b) WP2 – Developing improved clinical guidelines for local context and evaluation. SB sent
in the report plus appendices. Information to be added regarding Malawi. SB enquired
about the length of the report. AMB said there are no specific word totals for the core report.
c) WP3 – DD has sent the report; awaiting review by PO’H
d) WP4 – PO’H said this is in progress
e) WP5 – AMB sent a draft to PO’H
Action: Document combining the above drafts to be circulated on 29th August; final
comments to be received by 5th September.

Other progress to report by work packages
Nothing to report.
5.
Research
Malawi – DE is reviewing the collection of primary data. WC is analysing the first batch of
data and will be making her next round of visits before the November training course is
underway. PhD registration still not completed – awaiting word from research office but
hopes to start in October.
Tanzania – SP reported the paediatrician is almost ready to start.
Discussion about fees: as long as fees are paid prior to the end of the ETATMBA funding
period, a registered PhD student will be allowed to continue.
DE reported that a protocol paper will shortly be submitted to an open-access journal, which
will contribute to WP4.
6.
Module 3 staffing and planning
This is all underway. CC is managing the logistics; SQ is managing the course content.
Peter Jiskoot is available to teach on the first two weeks of the module. PO’H is in contact
with him regarding this.
7.
Degree course development
Malawi. FK reports that the review of the BSc is progressing through the College of
Medicine and is about to go to Senate. PO’H reported that the Warwick degree will start its
next phase in September with committee reviews pending.
8.
Any other business
SB raised concerns over subcontracting rules as Karolinska have rejected some invoices he
has submitted.
Action: AMB to discuss with the Desk Officer and report to SB.
