AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET ON Candidate and Job Specification – Commercial Scientist Tesco is the leading multichannel retailer in the UK, with more than 3,000 stores and successful online and digital businesses. As a result of this Tesco is producing large amounts of data. Clever analytics and data science is required to make sense of this data and to help Tesco make better decisions on top of these insights. You will be joining a highly analytical team that focuses on delivering data applications that help Tesco make better decision. The Commercial Science Team combines in depth analysis with practical recommendations to solve complex problems. We work closely with the commercial teams in General Merchandise (Toys, Hardware, Electrical, Home and Celebrations) to deliver these business changes. You will be part of a bigger network of data scientists across the Tesco group that can give you access to opportunities across very different parts of the businesses. Our Commercial Scientists are expected to apply a scientific approach to retail problems, delivering solutions to improve the customer experience as part of a dedicated project team. They need to have strong business awareness and the ability to combine detailed analysis with practical recommendations. They should have a strong mathematical understanding and coding experience while being able to explain complex issues and present solutions simply and clearly. The role of the Commercial Scientist covers four main areas; strong candidates should be able to demonstrate their ability across these areas. 1. Business Awareness: To ensure that we consistently deliver real value for our customers it’s vital our scientists combine a strong understanding of our market and the competition (both online and offline) 2. Communication: To interpret complex data and communicate findings, both written and verbal, in a simple and clear way and to engage with Senior Directors to implement business change. 3. Analytical Expertise: To develop and test hypotheses based on their knowledge of the Tesco business using carefully selected data and mathematical techniques. To deliver insightful, rigorous, analysis to drive business change. 4. Coding / Programming: To turn the analysis into an application that helps the business make better decisions or provides a better experience to our end customers. Candidate Profile: - Technical Understanding: A strong numerical degree and a minimum A in Alevel maths or equivalent. Communication: The ability to communicate complex ideas simply and clearly both verbally and in writing Time Management: The ability to prioritise tasks and take ownership of their own work in order to support project timelines. Programming Experience: Experience in SAS, R or other analytical software packages. Experience in MySQL, NoSQL and Hadoop. Experience in Javascript, PHP, d3 or other front end languages. The ideal candidate will have a background in machine learning. A background or strong understanding of the retail sector and/ or ecommerce would be advantageous.
