Bibliography: The Assignment
The next leg of the Research Paper is the bibliography. Below, I spell out what a bibliography is
and how to write one. It is a really good way for me to see how well your sources tie to the research you
are conducting on “your” topic. It isn’t simply a form of punishment or sadism.
Your FINAL bibliography needs to include AT LEAST 10 sources. These sources need to be
academically unimpeachable (ie no Wikipedia). Use sources like the Combs text, books on the subject
(Gavilan College Library has ebooks), academic journals (ie Journal of Small Wars, Journal of Conflict
Studies and the like), magazines and newspapers, respectable data bases (Ebsco Host, CQ Researcher,
Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, History Resource Center, etc), and other respectable web sites
(like Real Clear Politics, Politico, CNN, etc).
This assignment is due in 1 week, or Monday, March 28 IN CLASS. You know the penalty for not
submitting this assignment: ½ a letter grade will be docked from your final assignment. Seeing as those
points add up, don’t forget about this!
What is a Bibliography?
A Bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. A bibliography provides specific
information about each source you have used. As a researcher, you have become an expert on your topic and
have the ability both to explain the content and to assess the usefulness of your sources for those not in the
know.
The Process
Creating a bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct
analysis, and informed library research. First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents
that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then
choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. Cite the book, article, or document
using the appropriate style.
Note: In the final draft of your paper you MUST cite the sources you list in your bibliography IN BODY OF
YOUR PAPER. If you don't that is plagiarism. Each time you borrow (direct quotes or paraphrasing/putting
in your own words) you need to cite your source. **See MLA Works Cited Page handout for more specificity
than I can provide here
