Cooper Power Systems Announces
Integrated Volt/VAR Control Field Trial Agreements
New software module provides added functionality to advanced energy services platform.
WAUKESHA, WI, February 22, 2010 - Cooper Power Systems, a division of Cooper Industries plc
(NYSE: CBE), today announces it has agreements with three leading utilities to begin field trials of an
Integrated Volt/VAR Control (IVVC) application. This is the latest module to be incorporated into the
company’s Yukon Advanced Energy Services software platform. Integrated Volt/VAR control is an
enhancement to the company’s existing Centralized VAR Management Application.
Cooper Power Systems has a tradition of providing quality management solutions to utilities across the
United States. In 2000, the company launched a Centralized VAR Management solution at a large
Midwest utility and in 2004, it deployed the Multi-Volt algorithm which regulates voltage and optimizes
power factor on substation feeders lacking regulators or load-tap changers (LTC). The company’s
Yukon VAR Management application along with its CBC 7000 Capacitor Controller is currently in
operation in more than 15,000 field deployed capacitors at more than 20 utilities.
Cooper Power Systems’ Yukon software uses real-time field values to monitor, analyze and determine
the best action to maintain a flat voltage profile and optimized power factor. The algorithm uses inputs
such as substation LTCs, regulators and substation and distribution capacitors, as well as customer
meters from an AMI network.
“Integrated Volt/VAR Control delivers quality power to the customer in the most efficient manor while
reducing the utility’s cost to deliver electricity,” said Tom Pitstick, Vice-President and General Manager
of the Energy Automation Solutions division at Cooper Power Systems.
An additional benefit is the ability to initiate a Conservation Load Reduction event during daily or system
peaks to reduce system demand. This allows utilities to reduce their load when the grid is the most
constrained and kWh prices are at a premium price.

In addition to straight forward integration to SCADA, EMS, OMS or DMS systems, the Yukon IVVC
module has a robust Web browser user interface for operators, engineers or IT team members; offering
secure remote access to operation personnel addressing field maintenance or troubleshooting.
The company’s engineers have leveraged the technology of their CymeDIST analysis software to
develop and validate the Yukon IVVC algorithm. Supported by CymeDIST, Cooper Power Systems is
developing an IVVC application which is flexible enough to accommodate the voltage and VAR
objectives for each customer based upon configured algorithm parameters. This design supports the
company's goals to deliver a standard off-the-shelf IVVC application that is easy to deploy and
significantly reduces cost of ownership.
“The development of the IVVC application displays significant progress in our efforts to expand the
automation solutions we offer electric utilities,” said Cooper Power Systems group president, Mike
Stoessl. “This new enhancement leverages our distribution expertise across our Regulators, Capacitors
and our EAS business units. IVVC is the direct result of interacting with and hearing from our customers
in order to give them the solutions they require to deploy their Smart Grid.”
