Elyria City District Project Initial Observations The City of Elyria, Ohio consists of three distinct neighborhoods joined by a downtown area of shops, restaurants, government buildings, and a park square. The residents of Elyria value clean, well-kept streets and public and private properties, landscaping and historic architecture, of which there are many examples throughout the city. Very few contemporary buildings exist in Elyria, with both residential, commercial, and government buildings being a mix of past architectural styles. Each residential district is adjacent to a park and the residents value the landscape’s natural features, especially the waterfalls. The Black River winds through all four districts of the city and train trestles act as gateways from the downtown are to each district. Berry Jamie Finkelhor Irene Giller Rick Salsberry Sketches: Gateway and identifiers Gateway Element 1 The fixtures will be narrow rectangular iron frames with centered grates incorporating the identity pattern common to its location.. Gateway Element 2 Train trestles serve as natural gateways and would be embellished in one of two ways: The name of the neighborhood would be laser cut and attached perpendicular to the top edge of the trestle. Natural and staged light would allow a shadow to be cast kinetically across the face of the trestle, similar to the Hollywood Shadow Project. Or, the identity pattern and name would be incorporated into an iron grate covering the expanse of the trestle façade. The grate would protrude at a slight curve, allowing for shadow and readability. Identifier Element 1 Custom street signs using detail specific to the identity of the neighborhood. The street signs would be attached to existing structures. Identifier Element 2 A banner system attached to existing structures. The top of the banners would be connected to patterned accent frame.
