This document contains two General Surgery placement descriptions: North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description – West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement F1 General Surgery/ Colorectal Surgery Surgical Department To attend a generic, a departmental and a personal induction programme with your consultant educational supervisor. To work to a timetable provided at the beginning of the 4 month period. To be responsible for producing and TTO’s to allow their receipt by GPs within 24 hours of the discharge of an inpatient. Although fairly heavily committed to the routine care of patients, the FHO1 is free, after discussion with his/her consultant, to undertake any audit project as may be appropriate. To attend the FH01 teaching programme on Tuesday, 1200 – 1400 West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust Watford General Hospital Mr Rodney Hallan Mr Alla Amin Mr Ross Cheetham Mr James Arbuckle F1 duties – caring for patients on ward, performing ward jobs, attending F1 teaching. Mon: Ward round and jobs Tues: Ward round and jobs Wed: Ward round and jobs Thurs: Theatre, ward round, jobs Fri: Ward round and jobs Sat: Once a month, when on call Sun: Once a month, when on call On call requirements: 1 week of on call per month, alternating 7 days on call then 7 nights on call. It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change. 04/03/15 Placement The department The type of F1 General Surgery/ Upper GI Surgery Surgical Department F1 work is concentrated on the Watford General Hospital site. The Surgical department has three Consultants leading on GI Surgery. Upper GI has three F1s. The F1s in surgery are responsible for their team’s ward patients during a normal work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement Employer information working day. One week in four is spent on call (either days or nights) in which case the work is based with the on call team looking after take patients only. There are many opportunities for learning involving the recognition of the acutely unwell patient on call, the development of communication skills and multi-disciplinary working while looking after ward patients, prescribing skills and teaching medical students. West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust Watford General Hospital Mr.J.Livingstone Mr A Al-Bahrani The main duties of the placement are looking after the team’s patients on the ward or looking after the take patients while on call. Opportunities to go the theatre do occur but are based around having sufficient cover on the wards during this time. Teaching takes place twice per week with an hour of surgical teaching on Mondays and two hours of general F1 teaching on Tuesday. On call requirements: 1 week in 4, including weekends. Teaching available on Monday afternoon and Tuesday lunchtimes. Theatre time is available during the week.
