This course was created nearly ten years ago by a faculty member who has since left the university and it does not reflect the Historic Preservation Program’s current approach to the topic. The course and its catalog description are being changed to reflect the themes that are most relevant in the field internationally.

Preservation’s history is covered from its earliest international beginnings in the 16th century to the present. Preservation’s past is examined as to how it shapes the future. Attention is given to how historic preservation has evolved in different countries and the present applications in each.

The evolution of Historic Preservation is examined from the19th century to the present. The course focuses upon international conventions and practices, contrasting approaches in the United States with those in Europe and elsewhere. Attention is given to recent trends in historic preservation and heritage conservation such as digital heritage and intangible cultural heritage.
