A. Rationale for Revision:
The title of this class, Material Culture Studies: A Disciplinary Overview was devised over 25 years ago as part of the
Geography and early Historic Preservation program curricula and was taught primarily by geography professors.
Currently, the historic preservation profession no longer looks at material culture through the lens of different
disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology, etc. Instead, it analyzes a variety of objects through using
methodologies of different material culturists, most of whom are American cultural historians. This revision was
developed by the faculty who has taught the course for the last 15 years. Lastly, adding the GHPR prefix will
accurately reflect the large number of Historic Preservation graduate program students who take this course.
