OFFICE.
A. Rationale for Revision:
Currently, the History Section at Eastern Michigan University offers one course in U.S. Women’s History: Women in
America since 1800. I am proposing to create a two-part survey: Women in North America to 1865 (outlined in a
separate proposal) and Women in the United States since 1865. Starting the course in 1865 as opposed to 1800 will
allow students to gain a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of women in the United States from the end
of the Civil War to the present day. Furthermore, 1865 marked a significant year for women across the United States
and this new course periodization will create a more logical starting point to investigate the historical experiences of
African American, Native American, White, and European immigrant women.
