Minutes of the Meeting of 3 February 2011 A copy of an email from the WGST representative was distributed and discussed, requesting that the sentence “The PSY guests stated (and demonstrated with a memo from WGST) that they originally had WGST support with recommended revisions and that PSY had acted on those recommendations, which included adding WGST courses” be changed to “The PSY guests stated that they made WGST’s recommended revisions and acted on those recommendations, which included adding WGST courses.” Motion to Approve the original minutes: 4 For, 0 Against, 2 Abstentions. III. Old Business: College of Arts and Sciences SAC Proposal for New Graduate Certificate Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies (tabled at 3 February 2011 meeting: for discussion with ART and CMTA (Art Management) to explore inclusion of their courses to achieve the interdisciplinary scope suggested by the title or for a title change) The guest from SAC described the origins of the certificate: to address growing cultural representations in museums, to provide applied opportunities, and to address current student demand for the subject. On discussions with ART and CMTA (Art Management), she stated she sent an email to both ART and CMTA. She emphasized that courses from those units were not included in the proposed certificate to launch the certificate now with more regularly taught courses from ANTH and HP and to later transition to a broader certificate. During the transition to new inclusions, and cross-listings, she could provide substitutions for students with broader interests. In addressing questions on including ART courses, she stated that the certificate is comparable to other U.S. and European programs emphasizing a scientific approach to cultural representation as a branch of museology. Earlier in the process, July Meyers (ART) was consulted and a student explored the applicability of CMTA courses. In response to questions on discussions and/or integration with AAS, ART, and CMTA (Art Management), and on the use of the word “art” in the description, she expressed intent to later include and cross-list with more disciplines but to first initiate the proposed certificate, which meets current student demand. When asked about changing the title to better reflect this specific focus of study (as opposed to the broader “Museum Studies”) and later change the title when revised to a broader focus, she expressed willingness to consider this. Motion to Table for a title change to better reflect the specific focus (suggesting as a potential option “Museology”) – to facilitate the initiation of the certificate with that focus - and for a discussion with Arts Management (specifically Ken Stevens and Susan Badger-Booth): Tabled Unanimously.
