COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL Arts Committee MINUTES 7 June 2012 15:30, Room 219, Pray Harrold Present: Sacksteder (ART), Hammill (CMTA), Däumer (ENGL), Dieterle (HIST/PHIL), Ensor (SAC), Higgins (WGST), Vosteen (WL, chair) Ex-Officio: Mehuron (CAS Dean’s Office) I. Call to Order: 15:35 II. Minutes of the Meeting of 10 May 2012: APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY III. Old Business College of Arts and Sciences ART & CMTA Request for New Course ARTH 255 Visual and Cinematic Arts Since 1900 Tabled Unanimously on April 12 until both the ART and CMTAT courses can be considered at the same time; remained on table 10 May APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY ENGL & WGST Request for New Course WGST/LITR445 Sexualities in Literature and Culture APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY IV. New Business College of Technology COT Requests for New Courses TETP110 Teaching Impacts of Design, Engineering, and Technology PASSED UNANIMOUSLY WITH THE COMMENTS that the description needs correction (the course is not for students “in grades K-12”) and that item 12c needs correction (the course is not for graduate students). HRM120 Cooking Essentials for Non-Majors TABLED UNANIMOUSLY: The proposed course does not provide options for students with moral, religious, or other prohibitions for handling some food items (options need to be available to accommodate student diversity) and the proposal should be accompanied by a bibliography. HRM386 Global Hospitality Management II PASSED UNANIMOUSLY WITH THE COMMENT that the dress code description is vague for men yet very specific for women. The subcommittee recommends changing the description to something like “proper business attire is required,” which addresses both men and women in the same manner. HRM435 Entrepreneurship in the Hospitality Industry TABLED UNANIMOUSLY: The proposal needs clarification. The attached syllabus appears to have little to do with the proposed course. If different topics will be taught for this course, then “Topics in…” should be included in the title and catalog description. Additionally, the proposal is missing a bibliography. COT709 Introduction to Statistical Reasoning in Technology TABLED UNANIMOUSLY: The proposal does not indicate why this course is specific to technology. The course appears similar to other graduate level statistics courses and COT should consult with COB, COE, and CAS departments having existing graduate level statistics courses. V. Chair’s Remarks: The chair suggested implementing a requirement that tabled proposals being resubmitted be accompanied by a letter or memo addressing how each proposal was revised. Such letters/memos would better enable the subcommittee to identify the changes. The Ex-Officio stated that the recommendation will be pursued. VI. Adjournment: 16:10 Respectfully submitted, Bradley E. Ensor, recording secretary
