UCL, Department of Italian School of European Languages, Culture and Society Wednesday 20 January 2016, 6:00 p.m. UCL, Italian Seminar Room, Foster Court 351 Jessica Stewart The Changing Face of Street Art in Rome As the modern day street art phenomenon explodes globally, with an ever increasing race by cities to produce large-scale murals in the name of “urban requalification,” this talk explores the development of street art in Rome. Arriving to Italy’s capital city late compared to international centres such as London, New York, and Paris, over the course of the last 15 years street art has moved from a strictly underground movement to a city sponsored cultural spectacle. The exploration of techniques, from stickers to large-scale murals, and key artists, such as Sten + Lex, Agostino Iacurci, and Alice Pasquini, and their development highlight the evolving nature of creating art in a public context and the complexities of moving from illegal to legal work. JESSICA STEWART is a Rome-based creative producer and photographer with an MA in Renaissance Studies from UCL. Focusing her work on urban art, in 2013 she published the book Street Art Stories Rome (Mondo Bizzarro Publications) and in 2014 her photographic archive of street art in Rome was acquired by the Treccani encyclopaedia. She has curated several exhibitions in Rome and actively works with artists to produce large-scale urban art projects. ALL WELCOME
