Description: Students participate on the active in- and out-patient Services in Head and Neck Surgery
as well as in the care of patients seen in the Operating Room at UCLA. Didactic training on Wednesday
afternoons includes Tumor Board and Otology, Audiology, Oncology, Facial Plastic and Reconstruction
conferences. *For 4 weeks please list twice on MAXI Scheduling.

Increase skills in physical examination of the head and neck.
Become familiar with benign and malignant neoplasms of the head and neck.
Learn the most efficient methods of diagnosing and evaluating head and neck neoplasms.
Learn how to do a thorough history, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation of the dizzy
patient.
Learn how to do a thorough history, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation of the
hearing loss patient.
Learn to recognize and treat common ear diseases and infectious diseases of the head and neck.
Learn the basic principles of facial cosmetic surgery.
Learn how to evaluate pediatric airways.
Learn how to evaluate common pediatric problems related to the upper aerodigestive tract.
Typical Weekly Schedule:
Monday: 6W Round 6:30 a.m., Clinic 8:00 a.m., Clinic 1:00 p.m., Rounds 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 6W Round 6:30 a.m., Surgery 8:00 a.m., Clinic 1:00 p.m., Rounds 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 6W Teaching Rounds with Dr. Berke 6:30 a.m., Surgery Grand Rounds 7:30, Clinic 8:00
a.m., Conferences 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Thursday: 6W Round 6:30 a.m., Clinic 8:00 a.m., Clinic 1:00 p.m., Rounds 5:00 p.m.
Friday: 6W Round 6:30 a.m., Clinic 8:00 a.m., Clinic 1:00 p.m., Rounds 5:00 p.m.
On-Call Schedule and Weekend Activities: Fourth year students are not required to be on-call.
Basic Science courses are held on Wednesday afternoons.
