Website Redesign Specifications (first draft, 11/8/07)
Header
top section - same logo as now, but narrower, so that the total height of all sections is the same as or less than
the current banner; make “University of Washington” and “College of Forest Resources” hot spots with
hyperlinks to the respective home pages (same as current banner)
middle section - photos with links to videos of students working in the field and labs, talking about their work
(start out with just photos - with meaningful alt tags - until videos are produced)
bottom section - navigation men, modeled after UW Biology Dept. (http://www.biology.washington.edu/); same
on all pages; quick links shouldn’t be necessary with this type of menu structure
- where feasible, incorporate areas of undergraduate study (Environmental Science and Resource
Management and Paper Science and Engineering) as well as graduate interest areas (Environmental
Horticulture and Urban Forestry, Forest Ecology, Forest Soils, Forest Systems and Bioenergy, Paper Science
and Engineering, Restoration Ecology, Social Sciences, Sustainable Resource Management, Wildlife Science)
into the header and/or the content of the CFR home page, for recruitment purposes - or have each one
represented by a photo and linked video in the middle section described above(?)
Content
context-sensitive navigation menus on left side of page, about 15-20% of the total page width, or whatever
looks good; will appear on all pages on and below each of the major (2nd-level) areas in the site map below;
generally these will consist of links to the pages listed in the 3rd level of the site map below
main content area is between header and footer (with adequate blank space above and below), and covering
the remaining 80-85% of the page width
