CFR Web Advisory Committee Minutes
January 22, 2008
Attending: Diemer, Mehlin, Paul, Trudeau, West
Absent: Lutz, Morrison, Moskal, Panza
1. Minutes from the January 8 and January 15 meetings were approved.
2. Jon reported that he has only received one response to the Web Assistant job
posting on the HuskyJobs site, and that he has determined that that site appears to
serve primarily students looking for full-time jobs after graduation. So he created a
Student Employment page on the CFR site
(http://www.cfr.washington.edu/Acad/studentemployment.html) and had HR put a
link to it on their “Student Employment Links” page
(http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/jobs/student_empl_links.html), which is very
heavily used by students. Unfortunately, there has only been one response so far
since it was posted on Friday, January 18. So Jon created a PDF “flyer” which he
printed and gave to Amanda, who will post it on various bulletin boards in Anderson,
Bloedel, and Wink. Michelle will also send it electronically to all CFR students as well
as the UW Advisors’ mailing list.
3. Cecilia showed us the Contact page prototype she had created, and we agreed on
the format. Jon will provide text and an email address for the Webmaster item, and
Cecilia will add shipping addresses, which Margie provided in her January 15 email.
We also agreed that the footer item should be “CONTACT US” rather than just
“CONTACT” to make it more friendly, and that Jon should post this on the current
site as soon as it’s ready, since it’s important information that’s on most web sites
and should be on ours.
4. Cecilia showed us a sample “Spotlight” article that will be linked from the home
page. The content for this on the home page will consist of a small photo related to
the spotlight, as well as the first few lines of the article, with “more…” at the end,
which will be a link to the entire article.
5. Cecilia showed us her new version of the Centers and Programs page, which
includes revised introductory text and separate lists for Centers and Programs.
Steve will edit and present to the next Dean’s Council meeting for discussion and
approval.
6. We discussed and approved the final draft of the specifications document that Jon
had revised last week
(http://www.cfr.washington.edu/internal/committees/committees/CFRWebSpecs4.pd
f). The only changes were changing “CONTACT” to “CONTACT US” on the footer (as
mentioned in #3 above); and in the site map deleting Faculty from the Academic
Programs menu (because it will be under the new People menu), adding content
notes to Prospective Graduate Students, and deleting content notes from
Committees. Jon will make these minor changes (still calling it the final draft), and
send it to John Linse at UW Publications Services requesting a final prototype PDF for
review at the next committee meeting. Finally, Jon reported that UW Publications
Services has only used about $2,500 of the design budget so far. The maximum
estimate was $4,560, so this is good news since we’re almost done with design.
