School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Faculty Meeting Minutes April 24, 2012, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Anderson Hall Room 22 CALL TO ORDER 10:30 The meeting was called to order by Tom Hinckley, Interim Director, at 10:35 a.m. The faculty voted to approve of the minutes of the February 28, 2012, March 13, 2012, March 27, 2012, and April 10, 2012 Faculty Meetings by a vote of 32 Approve, 0 Oppose, 2 Abstain. ANNOUNCEMENTS 10:35 • Saturday-Sunday, April 28-29, 2012, Washington Park Arboretum, FlorAbundance Spring Plant Sale to benefit the Arboretum. See o http://www.arboretumfoundation.org/?page_id=240 • Please provide the information statements regarding your sponsored Affiliate and Adjunct Faculty. The statements are due no later than noon on May 1, 2012. • At least one more nomination for the open College Council seat is needed. FACULTY ACTIONS 10:40 • Proposed Affiliate Assistant Professor Faculty Appointment John Marzluff moved and Doug Sprugel seconded the motion that the faculty consider the appointment of Brian Kertson as Affiliate Assistant Professor. This appointment is sponsored by Aaron Wirsing. Dr. Kertson obtained his PhD from the University of Washington in Wildlife Science in 2001. Currently, Dr. Kertson is a Wildlife Research Scientist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Dr. Kertson would like to use his position in WDFW to facilitate agency-supported research on carnivore ecology, behavior, and management through SEFS. The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in the Director’s office. • Proposed Affiliate Assistant Professor appointment for Christian Torgersen Darlene Zabowski moved and Ernesto Alvarado seconded the motion that the faculty consider the appointment of Christian Torgersen as Affiliate Assistant Professor. This appointment is sponsored by Tom Hinckley. Dr. Torgersen has been an Assistant Professor WOT for several years. Due to changes in the federal ethics laws he can no longer hold this position. He is allowed to hold an affiliate faculty position, and in order for him to maintain an official relationship to the University of Washington and the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences it was decided to move forward with an affiliate appointment. Dr. Torgersen will continue to serve as a Graduate Faculty member and retain the ability to chair committees. He will also be able to provide guest lectures. C:\DOCUME~1\cece\LOCALS~1\Temp\im180411.docx School of Forest Resources Faculty Meeting Minutes Page 2 • Proposed Elected Faculty Advisory Council (EFAC) Members Tom Hinckley moved and Dorothy Paun seconded the motion that the faculty consider the nominees for Elected Faculty Advisory Council (EFAC) membership: John Bakker Dan Vogt Susan Bolton Kristiina Vogt John Marzluff Jon Bakker and John Marzluff were elected. • Proposed Curriculum Committee Members Tom Hinckley moved and Dorothy Paun seconded the motion that the faculty consider the nominees for Curriculum Committee membership: Stanley Asah Sergey Rabotyagov Kern Ewing Kristiina Vogt Rob Harrison Stanley Asah and Sergey Rabotyagov were elected. • Proposed Promotion, Merit, and Tenure Committee (PMT) Members Tom Hinckley moved and Dorothy Paun seconded the motion that the faculty consider the nominees for Promotion, Merit, and Tenure Committee membership: Renata Bura Rob Harrison Frank Greulich Soo-Hyung Kim John Marzluff Charlie Halpern Soo-Hyung Kim and John Marzluff were elected. A run-off election will be held between Renata Bura and Charlie Halpern at the next faculty meeting. They both received the same number of votes. • Proposed Candidates under Consideration for Director of School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Vote 1: • Rob Harrison moved and John Marzluff seconded the motion that the faculty consider the qualifications of the candidates for the Director of the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. The qualifications of the four candidates, Gary Machlis, Thomas DeLuca, Dean Glawe, and Edward Kirby were considered. The results of the vote shall remain confidential. Vote 2: • Rob Harrison moved and John Marzluff seconded the motion that the faculty rank the candidates for the Director of the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences.
