MISSION STATEMENT
Eastern Michigan University’s Recreation/Intramural Sports Department strives to
provide the campus and surrounding community with quality recreational facilities and
activities which promote a healthy lifestyle through participation in exercise, individual
and team sports, educational programs and recreational events.
The Rec/IM Department works closely with students and other valuable resources
toward the common University goals of unity, student development, and overall

ABOUT THE REC/IM
History
The Rec/IM first opened its doors in 1982. By student demand/referendum, the Rec/IM was

MEMBERSHIP
Introduction
To be eligible to participate in the many programs sponsored by the Recreation/Intramural
Department, an individual must be a currently enrolled student or have a current Eastern Michigan
University Rec/IM membership card. Currently enrolled students are automatically assessed a fee
in their tuition for the Student Rec Center. All other patrons, including continuing students (see
Definitions), must purchase a Rec/IM membership to enjoy the same privileges.
3
Every facility user must show picture identification to enter the building (i.e., valid Eagle One
ID, Rec/IM membership card, driver’s license with membership receipt/guest pass/forgotten ID
pass) and be able to provide it if asked while in the building. At the beginning of every semester,
it is suggested that students carry course confirmations for the first two weeks and that Rec/IM
members carry membership receipts when entering the facility along with picture ID. Beginning Fall
2015, members eighteen years and older may use our biometric system. Biometrics identifies people
by a unique hand characteristic. Biometric technologies compare a person’s unique characteristics
against a previously enrolled image for the purpose of recognition. It does not record finger or palm
prints. If the biometric is not recorded the patron must use their valid membership card.
Children under 18 who do not have picture identification must show their Rec/IM membership
receipt until their permanent membership card is available for use. In addition, children under 18
must be accompanied by an EMU student or a current Rec/IM member who is over 18. Eagle One
IDs and Rec/IM membership cards are not transferable.
Unauthorized IDs will be confiscated and fees paid will not be refunded. Violators will be subject to
sanctions by the Student Conduct and Community Standards Office as stated in the Student Code
of Conduct, which may result in loss of access and privilege. Those who have IDs confiscated, or
cannot provide proper identification, are not allowed to use the facility, or purchase guest passes,
for themselves nor any other person, that same day.
Current non-sponsored members or currently enrolled EMU students may sponsor other adults for
facility memberships at the sponsor’s affiliation rate. Eligible Member Definitions
The following individuals are eligible to purchase memberships:
Student
Any currently enrolled EMU student with a valid Eagle One ID card (may need proof of registration
during the beginning of the semester). Enrolled students may add spouse/partner, children, and
dependents and/or sponsor other adults for a semester, multiple semesters, or annual facility
memberships.
Continuing Student
Continuing Student memberships are available for spring/summer only. Any student not enrolled
for the current semester, but was enrolled for the previous semester, or is enrolled for the following
semester. Non-enrolled students must purchase a Rec/IM membership for the semester in which the
individual is not enrolled in order to use the Rec/IM facility (Fall/Winter semesters will be charged
at alumni rate, Spring/Summer semesters will be charged at continuing student rate if they were
enrolled for classes the previous semester or are enrolled for the next semester). Enrollment will be
verified by Rec/IM staff. No refunds will be issued if continuing student status is found to be invalid.
Continuing students may add spouse/partner, children, and dependents and/or sponsor other
adults for semester, multiple semesters, or annual facility memberships.
Faculty/Staff
Any current employee of EMU with verifying identification, or a guest lecturer who shows proof of
lectureship for the current semester. All EMU employees must show their faculty/staff ID. Faculty/
Staff members may add spouse/partner, children, dependents and/or sponsor other adults for
semester, multiple semesters, or annual facility memberships.
Alumni
Any person having previously attended a full semester at Eastern Michigan University. Alumni status
4
will be verified by Rec/IM staff. No refunds will be issued if alumni status is found to be invalid.
Alumni members may add spouse/partner, children, and dependents and/or sponsor other adults
for semester, multiple semesters, or annual facility memberships.
Emeritus/Retiree
Any former EMU employee honored with emeritus status, or officially designated as a retired EMU
employee must have verifying identification when purchasing a Rec/IM membership. Emeritus/
retirees may add only one person (age 18+) at the Emeritus/Retiree (freebie) rate per membership
time period. After adding only one person (age 18+) at the Emeritus/Retiree rate, Emeriti/Retirees
can add spouse/partner, children, and dependents and/or sponsor additional adults at the Faculty/
Staff sponsor rate.
Non-Affiliate
Any adult with none of the previously listed affiliations with Eastern Michigan University may
purchase a Rec/IM membership. Non-Affiliates may add spouse/partner, children, and dependents
and/or sponsor other adults for semester, multiple semesters, or annual facility memberships.
Sponsored Adult
Any person (18 or older) sponsored by a current/valid non-sponsored Rec/IM member or currently
enrolled student. Membership rate will be determined by using the sponsor’s affiliation. Examples
of sponsored adults include but are not limited to spouse, domestic partner, friend, family member,
neighbor, etc.
“Sponsor cannot sponsor”: Adults who are sponsored for a membership by a current/valid nonsponsored Rec/IM member or currently enrolled student are not allowed to sponsor others for
memberships. However, they are allowed to add a level (joining as a family in fusion) of immediate
family members only (spouse, domestic partners, children or dependents) under their membership.
Children 4-17 years of age
Children under the age of 18 (age at the time membership is purchased) may be added to any
parent’s or guardian’s current student or Rec/IM membership FOR THE SAME PERIOD OF TIME ONLY
(even for patrons who have a membership under a sponsor). The prices listed include ALL children
under 18 years of age regardless of number in family. There is no charge for children three years of
age or younger.
Dependent child 18-25 years of age
Each 18-25 year-old dependent (age at the time membership is purchased) may be added to any
parent’s or guardian’s current student or Rec/IM membership FOR THE SAME PERIOD OF TIME ONLY
(even for patrons who have a membership under a sponsor). The prices listed are PER DEPENDENT
added to the current membership. The dependent must live with his or her parents/guardians
or must be declared as a dependent on his or her parent’s/ guardian’s income tax return. The
dependent must provide proof of age and identification (picture ID).
Adult Policies
1. All facility users must possess a current membership, or be currently enrolled at EMU, to enter
the facility. Current non-sponsored members may sponsor or add other persons to their
membership.
2. Sponsored Adults cannot purchase or renew their memberships without a primary member
(sponsor). If the affiliated primary member (sponsor) does not have a current membership or
is not currently enrolled, the sponsored adult must purchase a non-sponsored membership
according to their affiliation. Sponsored adults cannot sponsor others for memberships.
5
3. When a dependent son or daughter (18-25 years of age) is added to a parent’s/guardian’s
membership, he or she must bring identification verifying his or her age. The parent/guardian
must be present and show his or her Eagle One ID card, or current Rec/IM membership card.
Dependent members (18-25 years of age) may sponsor up to two guests per daily visit at the
current guest pass rate. Dependents cannot be members without their parents/guardians having
a membership for the same time-period and cannot serve as sponsors for facility memberships.
4. If one’s membership status changes (i.e., staff to student), the following policies will be observed:
a. The original membership will be canceled with a refund given, if applicable. (See refund
policy.)
b. A new membership will be sold according to the new status. (See fee schedule.)
Child Policies
1. When children are added to a parent/guardian membership, the parent/guardian must be present
and show his or her current membership card or student ID. Children cannot be members without
their parents/ guardians having memberships for the same time period. Children three years of
age or younger are not required to purchase memberships or guest passes, but must be directly
supervised by their parent/guardian at all times.
2. Children under 18 years of age who have a valid membership card:
a. Must be accompanied by an adult Rec/IM member or currently enrolled student to enter the
Rec/IM facility.
b. Upon entering the facility, children 12 years of age and under must be directly supervised in
the activity area by their parent/guardian or sponsor. Children 13 to 17 years of age can utilize
all areas of the facility except the Fitness Room and pools without direct parental or sponsor
supervision. When children use these areas, they must be directly supervised. Young children
must be toilet-trained when using the swimming pools.
NOTE: When direct supervision is not required, the parent/guardian or sponsor must be
accessible within the facility.
c. May not sponsor a guest.
3. Children under 18 years of age who have not been included on their parent’s/guardian’s
membership form may use the recreational facilities as daily guests by paying the current daily
guest pass rate, when accompanied by an adult.
a. All children ages four and older, who are participating in an activity (i.e., swim-ming), must
possess a valid guest pass or a Rec/IM membership.
b. When children under 18 years of age are sponsored as daily guests, there must be at least one
adult member present for every two children, and the adult must remain in the facility during
the entire time that the children are in the building.
4. All children who enter the Rec/IM facility, either by membership or guest pass, are the
responsibility of the adult that sponsors them.
6
Guest Policies
Currently enrolled students and current adult Rec/IM members may sponsor daily guests to use
the recreational facilities under the following guidelines:
1. A guest pass must be purchased for each visitor (ages four and up) at the front counter of the
Rec/IM facility.
Guests must:
a. Have a sponsor present (currently enrolled student, current Rec/IM member who is 18 years
or older).
b. Show identification (for those 16 years or older), such as a driver’s license, or some other
picture ID.
c. Pay the current daily guest pass rate for each guest pass at the time of purchase.
2. Sponsors are responsible for the conduct of their guests within the Rec/IM facility. The sponsor
must accompany his/her guest(s) into the facility and be present with them throughout their
entire visit. When children under 18 years of age are sponsored as daily guests, there must be
at least one adult member present for every two children in the facility.
3. Current adult members (including continuing students, 18-25 year-old dependent members)
and enrolled students are allowed to sponsor four guests per daily visit.
4. Alumni who are not current Rec/IM members may sponsor themselves for daily guest passes
plus four guests per daily visit. This privilege is extended to alumni due to past fees paid toward
the facility. Alumni must show proof of having attended a full semester at EMU (past student
ID, financial bill, EMU progress report, etc.)
Forgotten ID Card Policies
Those who have forgotten their Rec/IM membership card or valid Eagle One ID may gain two free
allowances each semester to the Rec/IM facility by presenting some form of picture identification.
After the two free allowances have been used without a Rec/IM membership card or valid Eagle
One ID, there is a $5.00 non-refundable fee to gain access for the day.
Payment of Fees
All Rec/IM memberships are sold on an annual or a semester basis. Annual memberships are valid
from the date of purchase and expire one year from that date. Semester memberships are valid
from date of purchase through the end of the semester that the membership is purchased. The
annual and semester fees are listed in the membership fee schedule (page 9) and are subject to
change at any time.
University employees may elect to have the membership fees paid through the University payroll
deduction plan. The payments may be divided into ten (10) payments for annual memberships
and three (3) payments for those electing to join by semester. To activate the membership, the
EMU employee must sign the payroll deduction form. The membership is not valid until the
payroll deduction form has been signed.
Fees may also be paid by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard or Discover with verification of a driver’s
license.
7
Membership Refund Policy
Members may apply for a full refund within one (1) week of the purchase date. This applies to
both annual and single-semester memberships. After one week, a refund cannot be issued for the
current semester. A refund can be issued for any remaining semesters purchased, after the current
semester has been deducted (annual memberships only). Please allow four to six weeks to receive
the refund check. Card fees are not refundable.

IM membership cards are reusable.
