Colorado School of Mines Greek Community Information Glossary of Greek Terms CHAPTER: Local group of a national or international Greek organization. POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER: Man / woman going through the Recruitment process for membership. RECRUITMENT GUIDE: Greek members who serve as an impartial counselor to potential new members during the Recruitment period. BID: A formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority. MUTUAL SELECTION: The selection process when the potential new members choose the chapters and the chapters choose the potential new members. NEW MEMBER (Pledge): A student who has been accepted as a probationary member of a sorority or fraternity. INITIATE MEMBER: After a period of education about the sorority/fraternity and fulfilling specified requirements, a member becomes initiated (also known as an associate member or affiliate member). PANHELLENIC: The governing body of the three sororities on campus. INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL: The governing body for fraternities on campus.
