High Temperature Strength of Tool Steels Tempered to Various Hardnesses

For 3 credit hours the student must work approximately 120 hours on the project.
The focus of the project will be an experimental study and report that examines the heat
treatment and high temperature strength of tool steels. Three tool steel materials are available.
Samples of each steel will be tempered to five various hardness values. The samples will then be
compression tested at four temperatures, to examine the high temperature strength as a function
of prior tempering.
The final report will be submitted to Prof. Jones for grading on December 2, 2011. A draft
report for comments and suggestions will be accepted at any time up to November 18, 2011.
The report needs to have an abstract, an introduction to high temperature tool steel strength, a
description of the material and test procedure, a compilation of the testing results, a discussion of
the results in context of other studies in the literature, a conclusion and a list of cited references.
The report will be graded. The grade on the report will be the grade for the course.
