Dr. Terry Parker Provost and Executive Vice President September 23, 2013 Dear Mines Community: I would like to update the campus on the progress we have made in developing a strategic plan this fall. The five strategic planning subgroups have spent much of September considering large questions that are potentially very important to CSM in the future. (Note that we had a sixth effort focused on operational initiatives that is being addressed outside of the planning process.) The subgroups have developed initiatives and metrics to support the draft goals and strategies which emerged from the forums last spring. These goals, strategies, initiatives, and metrics were used as a basis for a first draft of a strategic plan which we shared with the Board of Trustees at their normally scheduled September 20th meeting. At this time, we would like to release this draft plan to the campus for comment. The draft of the strategic plan has been posted to the strategic planning Blackboard site for your review (website: https://blackboard.mines.edu course: Mines.perm: SPWG: Strategic Planning). We invite the campus community to the share feedback with the core strategic planning group (Terry Parker, Tom Boyd, Peter Han, Kirsten Volpi), with any member of the strategic planning subgroups (Heather Boyd, Tom Boyd, Tony Dean, Dan Fox, Ramona Graves, Peter Han, Pat Kohl, Nigel Middleton, John McCray, Kevin Moore, Vicki Nichol, Terry Parker, John Poate, Kay Schneider, Dendy Sloan, John Spear, Colin Terry, and Kirsten Volpi), with planning@mines.edu, or with Cynthia Pepper (one of our strategic planning consultants) at chpepper@pepperconsultinggroup.com. As was the case in April, we have engaged Marilyn Opdyke and Cynthia Pepper to assist in soliciting stakeholder feedback via campus-wide forums. The purpose of these forums is to encourage campus-wide discussions regarding the draft strategic plan. Proposed dates for these forums are Wednesday, October 8 and Thursday, October 9. Specific meeting times and room locations will be shared with you as soon as we finalize those details. The next steps as we continue to develop the strategic plan will be: Consider the recommended changes to the Mission, Vision, and Values statements, edit the statements based on these inputs, and then bring these statements back to the campus. Further define the details underpinning the goals and strategies that were presented to the Board on September 20. Gather input from the campus in the October open forums. Gather additional Board of Trustee’s input – October Board retreat. Further develop the plan based on the inputs from the campus and the Board. Present a revised plan, to be considered for adoption, to the Board of Trustees at the normally scheduled December meeting. I know that the semester is fully underway and that faculty and staff are extraordinarily busy with normal campus operations. In spite of this I encourage you to take a small amount of time and look through the draft strategic plan; please provide your feedback to one of the individuals email addresses listed above. As always, thanks to the faculty and staff for all that they do for Mines. All the Best, Terry Parker Provost and Executive Vice President 1500 Illinois Street Golden, CO 80401 MINES.EDU T 303‐273‐3320 F 303‐273‐3040
