November 6, 2013 Dear Campus Community: As I hope you are aware, we have been developing a strategic plan and have actively engaged the campus for input on both the Mission, Vision, and Values that define us and on the overall strategic plan that will guide us in the coming years. The purpose of this email is to update the campus on the status of this overall strategic planning effort. President Scoggins formally launched strategic planning in January of 2013 by informing the board of this year long effort. Campus open forums were held in the spring, the Strategic Planning Working Group was established, and we published our first iteration of Mission, Vision, and Values in July of this year. Attached to this email is the sixth version of Mission, Vision, and Values. I want to thank all of you that have added your thoughts to the development of these statements; your input was very valuable. As they currently stand, we have considered inputs from all sectors of the campus and have carefully solicited BOT input as well. We have the support of the Board in these statements as written. A first draft of a strategic plan was presented to the Board in September and this plan was also released to campus for comment. Using a series of campus forums, we collected comments on the draft plan. These comments may be found on the Blackboard site (https://blackboard.mines.edu course: Mines.perm: SPWG: Strategic Planning – Forum Results – Fall Forums) along with the first draft of the plan (in the Draft Summary Documents folder.) The overall input from the campus forums has been extraordinarily useful and these inputs were critical in further improving the plan. The current draft of the plan, which reflects BOT as well as campus input, is attached to this email. We are currently in the process of soliciting input from the strategic planning working group (names listed below) and we are also requesting input from the broader campus on this revised draft of the plan. Your input can either be direct (please send to planning@mines.edu) or to a member of the strategic planning working group. In the coming weeks, we will also present the plan to all of the organizational units on the campus. As we enter the month of November, we all note that the fall semester is more than halfway over. This in turn brings into focus all that we must accomplish in the coming weeks before graduation. Within these time constraints, if at all possible, please do find a bit of time to consider the strategic plan (again, provide comments electronically to planning@mines.edu). As always, thanks to all faculty and staff for all that you do for Mines. All the Best! M. W.
