October 10, 2014 Dear Mines Community: After discussion with the faculty in the College of Applied Science and Engineering (CASE), we are pleased to announce that Prof. Michael Kaufman, currently Department Head of The George S. Ansell Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, has agreed to serve as the Interim Dean of the College of Applied Science and Engineering effective immediately. Dr. Kaufman joined MME in 2007 and became Department Head in 2010. Prior to joining Mines, Dr. Kaufman spent 3 years at the University of Washington, 15 years at the University of Florida and 3.5 years at the University of North Texas. An external search for a permanent CASE dean is already underway. With MME faculty approval, Interim Dean Kaufman has appointed Prof. Ivar Reimanis to serve as the Interim Department Head of MME during this transition period. Dr. Reimanis is the Herman F. Coors Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair of Ceramics (since 2012) and is the director of the Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics. He received his Ph.D. in Materials from the University of California, Santa Barbara and then worked as a post-doc at the MaxPlanck-Institüt fur Metallforschung and later with Los Alamos National Laboratory. He joined CSM as an assistant professor in 1994. Prof. Chester Van Tyne will continue to serve as the Associate Department Head of MME and will assist Dr. Reimanis in his new role. Please join me in supporting Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Reimanis as they assume these interim leadership roles within CASE. Thank you also to the faculty, students and staff for all that you do to contribute to the excellence of Mines. All the Best, Terry Parker Provost and Executive Vice President
