EXPLANATION OF TERMS
Tier: Single-family homes are in one of four billing tiers based on the property’s total amount
of impervious surface.
Size: amount of square feet of impervious surface on residential property such as driveways,
rooftops, outbuildings, patios and private sidewalks. Size does not refer to heated square
living area of home.
Major System: “named” creeks and surrounding floodplains. Mecklenburg County is
responsible for the Major System. The Major System fee applies countywide.
Minor System: storm drains, storm water pipes, and small drainage ditches. City and Towns
are responsible for their respective Minor Systems.
FY or Fiscal Year: budget year that begins July 1. For example, FY12 begins July 1, 2011
and ends June 30, 2012.
Rates shown below do not include Administrative charge of 85¢ per billing cycle.
