UPDATE August 2003 Statesville Road Widening (from I-85 to Sunset Road) & Cindy Lane Extension (from Statesville Road to Nevin/Lake Roads) Roadway Citizen Questions History/Need Planning efforts by the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) have indicated the need to improve Statesville Road (from Interstate 85 to Sunset Road) and to extend Cindy Lane (from Statesville Road to the Nevin/Lake Road intersection). Goals for the street improvements include: • Reducing congestion • Improving safety • Providing added connectivity through sidewalks and bicycle lanes. With planning complete, Mulkey Engineers and Consultants are currently working with the City of Charlotte to design the widening of Statesville Road and to extend Cindy Lane. Public meetings were held on: • March 29, 2001 • September 20, 2001 • May 14, 2002 Project highlights include widening Statesville Road from two lanes to four lanes with: • A planted median • Sidewalks and planting strips • Bicycle facilities Cindy Lane Extension will extend Cindy Lane to the Nevin/Lake Road intersection for added connectivity and will consist of two lanes with: • Sidewalks and planting strips • Bicycle facilities In the fall of 2001, NCDOT announced plans to accelerate the construction of the I-77 widening project. Statesville Road is a major thoroughfare that parallels I-77. During our public meetings for Statesville Road and Cindy Lane, many citizens voiced concerns that these two major routes would be under construction at the same time thereby disrupting traffic. With the delay of requesting funds for the construction on Statesville Road, we will avoid those conflicts. The 2002 Transportation Bond Referendum did not include funds for the construction of the Statesville Road Widening and Cindy Lane Extension projects. We will continue to plan and design these projects with the intention of including funds for right-of-way acquisition and construction in a future bond referendum. To date, only funding for planning and design have been approved through the previous 2000 Transportation Bond Referendum. Question: How will Cindy Lane Extension affect adjacent property values? Answer: Historically, there is no information that supports loss of property value as a result of similar projects. Question: How are affected property owners compensated for land that will be acquired? Answer: Property will be purchased at fair market value. Question: When is the next public meeting? Answer: There is not another scheduled public meeting for these projects at this time. However, citizens will be continually updated through these newsletters.
