National e-Science Centre Testing access to the GILDA testbed e-Science Institute 7th April 2004 Dr Roberto Barbera, from INFN and the University of Catania, presented a two-hour introduction and tutorial on the GILDA testbed for the EGEE project. Participants from the Universities of Edinburgh and Brunel were given a brief overview of Grids, GILDA and the GENIUS portal before taking part in a practical session with both the command-line and GENIUS interfaces to GILDA. The goals of the session were achieved: 1. to demonstrate the viability of using GILDA and GENIUS in future EGEE courses 2. to give participants an overview of the technology, and initial experience of using it. Attendees were from research groups in Physics, Geography, Geology and from the Digimap project of EDINA, in the Edinburgh Data Library. Follow-up will be by continuing to build links between NeSC and both EDINA and the School of GeoSciences. Invitations to full two-day induction courses will be sent in future.
