(1/3 house hold in Japan) http://www.soumu.go.jp/main_content/000073161.pdf (in Japanese) Widely spreading IPTV services in Japan • IPTV subs.: Over 1 million • IP multicast, retransmission of digital terrestrial in real-time, VoD, download Harmonized domestic specifications and international standard; especially ITU-T • Reporting to the MIC (governing legal authority in IPTV services) and cooperation with domestic specifications through TTC member. • Domestic specifications conform to ITU-T standards. • IPTV-WG member consists of IPTV operators, Telcos, Broadcasters, Cable standardization organizations and manufactures (network, TV sets, etc.). 2 Highlight of Current Activities (2/2) IPTV Working Group • Technological discussion and consensus of ITU-T contributions from Japanese member • Network Architecture SWG Synergy with IPTV-GSI and NGN-GSI (SG11, 13) Liaison with NGN Working Group in TTC • QoE SWG Liaison with Network management Working Group in TTC (SG12) • Content protection SWG Content protection and Service protection excluding network security (SG17) • End system SWG Terminal equipments including Middleware, Home network (SG9, 16) 3 Strategic Direction IPTV market grows steadily Accumulated standardization work volume • Development and standardization were achieved for basic IPTV services Next: for continuous IPTV market growth • We need discussion of standardization theme for the next generation IPTV services. Standardization for reducing cost and keeping QoS/QoE 2. Harmonization with next generation IPTV services in Japanese SDO, Organization and SDO. 3. More efficient standardization issues in international Next generation standardization for advanced IPTV services In ITU-T Pick up next important standardization items Feed back ITU-T standardization status to the MIC and TTC member, and then make consensus for next ITU-T meeting action plan and contributions. 5 Next Steps/Actions Important standardization items will be chosen from market trends of IPTV services environment.
