• A brief history of photography
• Exploring different perspectives: When is photography considered art?
• Different approaches to art photography, with reference to various artists’ work: Seriality & documentation; memories, time, archives & trace; fiction & staged; scale
• Exploring more contemporary photographers: portrait, landscape, narrative, object, fashion, document, and city
• Deconstruction & in-depth analyses of a photograph
• Examining various elements within a photograph: theme, composition, lighting, form, etc
• Art photography project (to be developed by the students)
• Research methods: obtaining inspiration, exploring an idea, developing the concept (with the aid of guidance and research suggestions)
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Outline different perspectives with regards of photography, throughout history
• Categorise various approaches to art photography
• Familiarise themselves with contemporary art photographers
• Evaluate and analyze different elements with a photograph
• Acknowledge their own preferences with regards to photographic approaches
• Identify and incorporate certain key themes observed, as a guide to their process
• Explore their own ideas, by developing & interpreting them through the photographic medium
