Course Outline:
Introduction to Cinematic Storytelling
Plot, Structure, Backstory and Sub-plots
Character: Design, the Character Arc, Decisions and Unfinished Business
Conflict, Setting, Narration and Time
Scene Description, Action
Dialogue: Uses, Functions and Writing Dialogue as Action
Genre, Mood, Tone and Imagery
Synopsis, Treatment, Final Draft, Screenplay Standard Formatting
Deconstructing the Screenplay: How to Read Screenplays and the Script Report.
Learning Outcomes:
An awareness of screenwriting as a craft,
An understanding of:
• What makes a cinematic story (language of cinema)
• What makes a story great (emotional journey)
• Story’s structure and its theme (spine)
• The difference between plot-driven and character driven stories
• The difference between Speculative (on spec) and Commissioned Screenplays
The ability to:
• Write an outline, synopsis and treatment
• Read and format screenplays professionally
