Director of Environmental Health and Safety
The Vice President for Administration and Finance invites applications for the position of Director of
Environmental Health and Safety. The director will provide leadership, knowledge and interpretations of
federal and state regulations, codes and requirements. The director will develop and manage a highly
technical service organization to support university research, academic and support system programs. To this
effect, the director will work to establish a proactive safety culture throughout all K-State departments, units
and campuses. This individual will also act as the Associate Director of the Division of Public Safety.
Responsibilities








Direct university-wide programs to maintain and ensure consistent and effective safety programs that
are responsive to the needs of Kansas State University, a diverse research university. This includes but
is not limited to asbestos, lead, hazardous waste, hazardous materials, radioactive materials, bio
safety, fire safety, occupational safety, ventilation, environmental pollution and risk management
issues.
Communicate, collaborate and coordinate programs with campus community.
Provide leadership and management oversight for all staff (approximately 15) within the Department
of Environmental Health and Safety.
Manage and oversee the departmental budget.
Develop and implement strategic plans for the department consistent with K-State 2025.
Develop, review and administer programs to assure compliance with the federal and state
environmental, health and safety regulations. This includes but is not limited to asbestos, lead,
hazardous waste, hazardous materials, radioactive materials, bio safety, fire safety, occupational
safety, ventilation, environmental pollution and risk management issues.
Represent the university on issues relative to regulatory, legal and legislative matters where university
operations may have safety, occupational health and environmental implications. This involves
interactions with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA, KDOL and KDHE.
Communicate with the vice presidents, deans, department heads, faculty, staff and students, providing
technical assistance and/or oversight on environmental health and safety issues.
Required qualifications






Master’s degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, environmental science,
industrial hygiene, occupational safety, fire safety or other closely related fields.
Six years experience in environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, fire safety.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong customer service philosophy.
Self-starter with strong project management skills.
Leadership and staff development skills.


Valid Kansas driver’s license.
Ability to wear a respirator and participate with any emergency response team.
Preferred qualifications




Experience managing an environmental health and safety department at a college or university as
director or assistant director.
PhD in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, environmental science, industrial
hygiene, occupational safety, fire safety or closely related fields.
Supervisory experience.
Experience working in a lab in the above listed disciplines.
Salary
$90,000-$120,000
