Provide a brief overview of the project and the project area. (If applying for a fuels reduction
project, identify vegetation types, fire regime) [1500 Characters Maximum]
The proposed project plans to address the Lake Chelan South Lakeshore CWPP priority #1 project
of removing ladder fuels, and biomass form 80 acres of upper Lake Chelan State Park. We intend to
remove biomass in such a manner to create a fuel break between the adjoining properties, The plan
also will remove under story, over-topped and co-dominate trees through out the remaining 80 acres
with the goal of reaching a forest stand denisity of no more than 80 stems per acre. The final
prescription will require the marking of individual trees to be removed in the dense areas, the
removal of most trees under 6", reduction of significant elements of the understory, and cutting of
dead standing timber. Staff intend to chip woody material in accessable areas, stack and burn on
steep slopes, and burn in some moist areas.
The 80 acre forest plot lies on a rapidly rising slope of State Park property that serves as a buffer
between the park and Chelan Ridge Development. The property includes a large accumulation of
Ponderosa Pine, Douglas-fir, Big Leaf Maple and Cotton Wood trees. The understory is comprised
of Bitterbrush, Sage, Ocean spray, and Snowberry. Many other species of plants including
Walnut, Cherry, Elderberry, and Apple have been allowed to enter the forest plot.
Fire has been excluded from the site for at least 70 years resulting in the risk of a high severity fire.

Provide a brief scope of work which clearly describes how grant funds will be spent. (This

Based on previous work commissioned on this property I expect that total cost for this project will
be $120,000. 50% of this cost will be provided by the grant and the remainder will be supported by
staff time, volunteer work, equipment use, and donation. I estimate the total costs as follows:
Completion of shaded fuel break along Ridgeview Dr. $14,850.
Cut fuels from S. Lakeshore RD right of way
$8,250.

briefly the contributions each partner will make (i.e. – donating time/equipment, funding, etc.)

Lake Chelan State Park and the Chelan Ridge Owners Association will work collaboratively with
and seek leadership from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. We will seek
assistance from local contractors, county correction crews, park volunteers, high school students,
and members of Little Stone Church.
DNR will provide leadership and advice with perhaps a training day.
Parks will secure permits, provide chippers, and equipment. Parks will provide staff for work
details.

Clearly describe how the proposed treatments will be maintained over time. [500 Characters

Park staff intend to protect the area from future unwanted growth by tractor mowing in level areas,
grazing by goats, and burning in selected areas.
Staff will also continue to concentrate on ladder fuel reduction during routine annual work
assignments.
Biomass Utilization

For the purpose of this application, biomass utilization is defined as any practicable end-use of the material that
has value, or the trading of capital for the woody material.

Some firewood size pine and fir stems may be available for residential use these will be traded for
time applied to the project.
