Dear Parent/carer
St Maurice’s High School
North Lanarkshire Council
We are trying out some new approaches to inspection. You can find more information
about why we are doing this, and details of our new approaches, at the link below.1
St Maurice’s High School was inspected in November 2015. A team of inspectors
visited the school for two and a half days, following a two-day notification period.
During our visit, we talked to young people and worked closely with the headteacher
and staff. We looked at teaching, learning and assessment, and at how the school is
working to raise the attainment of all young people.
The inspection team found the following strengths in the school’s work.





The strong Catholic ethos which supports the positive relationships across the
school community.
Confident, articulate and caring young people who demonstrate a positive attitude
to their work and the wider community.
The wide range of high-quality opportunities for personal achievement which are
valued by young people.
The commitment of staff to providing out-of-class activities to support young
people’s attainment and personal achievements.
The headteacher’s success in developing a culture of shared leadership resulting in
improvements across the school.
The following areas for improvement were also identified and discussed with the
headteacher and North Lanarkshire Council.



Continue to improve the school’s approaches to monitoring and tracking young
people’s progress to ensure that they attain as highly as possible.
Share good practice more effectively to ensure consistently high-quality learning
and teaching across the school.
Continue to develop approaches to ensuring young people are appropriately
supported and challenged in lessons.

What happens next?
We are confident that the school has the capacity to continue to improve. North
Lanarkshire Council will inform parents about the school’s progress as part of its
arrangements for reporting to parents on the quality of its schools.
During the inspection, we identified interesting practice in modern languages. As a
result, we shall work with the school and North Lanarkshire Council to record the
practice and share it more widely to support improvement at national level.
