STRATEGIC CULTURES IN EUROPE: SECURITY AND DEFENCE POLICIES ACROSS THE
CONTINENT
Bastian Giegerich, Heiko Biehl & Alexandra Jonas
Springer VS
European countries work together in crisis management, conflict prevention and many other aspects of
security and defence policy. Closer cooperation in this policy arena seems to be the only viable way
forward to address contemporary security challenges. Yet, despite the repeated interaction, fundamental
assumptions about security and defence remain remarkably distinct across European nations. This book
offers a comparative analysis of the security and defence policies of all 27 EU member states and
Turkey, drawing on the concept of 'strategic culture', in order to examine the chances and obstacles for
closer security and defence cooperation across the continent. Along the lines of a consistent analytical
framework, international experts provide case studies of the current security and defence policies in
Europe as well as their historical and cultural roots.
SMALL STATES AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY: EUROPE AND BEYOND
Clive Archer, Ayson J.K. Bailes & Anders Wivel
Routledge
This book explains what 'small' states are and explores their current security challenges, in general
terms and through specific examples. It reflects the shift from traditional security definitions emphasizing
defence and armaments, to new security concerns such as economic, societal and environmental
security where institutional cooperation looms larger. These complex issues, linked with traditional power
relations and new types of actors, need to be tackled with due regard to democracy and good
governance. Key policy challenges for small states are examined and applied in the regional case
studies. The book deals mainly with the current experience and recent past of such states but also offers
insights for their future policies. Although many of the states covered are European, the study also
includes African, Caribbean and Asian small states. Their particular interest and relevance is outlined, as
is the connection between their security challenges and their smallness. Policy lessons for other states
are then sought. The book is the first in-depth, multi-continent study of security as an aspect of small
state governance today. It is novel in placing the security dilemmas of small states in the context of wider
ideas on international and institutional change, and in dealing with non-European states and regions.
PATTERNS OF DEMOCRACY: GOVERNMENT FORMS AND PERFORMANCE IN THIRTYSIX COUNTRIES
Arend Lijphart
Yale University Press
In this updated and expanded edition of his classic text, Arend Lijphart offers a broader and deeper
analysis of worldwide democratic institutions than ever before. Examining thirty-six democracies during
the period from 1945 to 2010, Lijphart arrives at important-and unexpected-conclusions about what type
of democracy works best.
RESEARCH METHODS IN POLITICS
Peter Burnham et al.
Palgrave MacMillan
This is a substantially revised and improved second edition of a book already established as the leading
introductory research methods text for political science. This book covers a very broad range of
methods. It is very accessibly written with many examples throughout drawn from a wide range of
countries and political systems. This 2nd edition is more systematically international in scope, is updated
throughout and has additional coverage of discourse analysis. It provides a comprehensive introduction
to the main research methods employed in the study of politics and assessment of their strengths and
limitations and of ethical issues in research. It has been revised and updated throughout, and a new
chapter considers the relationship between research and policy.
PRINCIPLES OF COMPARATIVE POLITICS (2nd edition)
William Roberts Clark et al.
CQ Press
Beginning with a clear and straightforward discussion of the comparative and scientific methods, each
chapter outlines the debates about the political phenomena that drive current research, such as state
failure, the economic and cultural determinants of democracy, or the effects of regime type and electoral
system. The authors show students how comparativists construct and test theories, applying the
principles of the scientific method and simple game theory to a wide variety of examples and cases. The
book's outstanding pedagogy includes chapter opener overviews, bolded key terms and a marginal
glossary, more than 250 tables and figures, numerous photos and maps, end of chapter problem sets,
and new works cited and country-specific bibliographies.
STEINER AND WOODS EU LAW (12th edition)
Lorna Woods and Philippa Watson
Oxford University Press
Now in its twelfth edition, Steiner & Woods EU Law is rightfully regarded as one of the best and most
trusted EU law textbooks available. The book includes a well-balanced range of topics for students
taking an EU law course at any level. It offers a careful blend of institutional and substantive coverage
and focuses on explaining the law clearly for student readers, as well as raising areas of debate to
inform class discussion and essays. Case detail is clearly sign-posted throughout the text, including
excerpts from leading judgements, while diagrams distil complex tests and procedures to visually
represent the workings of the EU. End of chapter reading suggestions plus a detailed bibliography
provide a helpful starting point for essay preparation and independent research.
EUROPEAN MEDIA
Stylianos Papathanassopoulos & Ralph M. Negrine
Polity Press
European Media provides a clear, concise account of the structures, dynamics and realities of the
changing face of media in Europe. It offers a timely and illuminating appraisal of the issues surrounding
the development of new media in Europe and explores debates about the role of the media in the
formation of a European public sphere and a European identity. The book argues that Europe offers an
ideal context for examining interactions between global, regional and national media processes and its
individual chapters consider: the changing structure of the European media; the development of new
media; the Europeanization of the media in the region; the challenges for the content; and audiences.
Special emphasis is given to the transformation of political communication in Europe and the alleged
emergence of a European public sphere and identity. European Media: Structures, Politics and Identity is
an invaluable text for courses on media and international studies as well as courses dealing with
European and national policy studies. It is also helpful to students, researchers and professionals in the
media sector since it combines hard facts with theoretical insight.
ARAB MEDIA
Noha Mellor et al.
Polity Press
This book provides a clear and authoritative introduction to the emerging Arab media industries in the
context of globalization and its impacts, with a focus on publishing, press, broadcasting, cinema and
new media. Through detailed discussions of the regulation and economics of these industries, the
authors argue that the political, technological and cultural changes on the global media scene have
resulted in the reorganization of the Arab media field. They provide striking examples of this through
the particular effects on media policies, media technology and the content and genres developed for
the new generation of media consumers. As part of the book's overview of the contemporary
characteristics of Arab media, the authors outline the development of the role of modern Arab media
from a tool of mobilizing the public to a tool of commercial and symbolic profit. Overall, the volume
illustrates how the Arab region represents a unique case where the commercialization and liberalization
of selected media industries has gone hand in hand with continuous state intervention and an
increasing self censorship. Written for students without prior knowledge of the topic, Arab Media will be
essential reading for all interested in the contemporary global media industries.
GLOBAL POLITICS
Andrew Heywood
Palgrave MacMillan
The extensively revised new edition of Global Politics provides a systematic and integrated analysis of
the theory and practice of contemporary international relations. Written with outstanding clarity and
drawing on an exceptionally wide range of theoretical perspectives throughout, each chapter is packed
with innovative features to aid study and reinforce learning. Focus and debating features look closer at
issues and approaches to promote critical thinking. Photographs and biographies of influential
theorists introduce the people, as well as the ideas, that have shaped the subject. This second edition
is fully updated to cover key developments, from the Arab Spring to the global financial crisis, and
provides enhanced coverage of issues like international migration. An entirely new chapter on theory at
the end of the book revisits key perspectives, and addresses deeper questions about the nature and
purpose of theory in international relations.

THE FIRST DECADE OF EU MIGRATION AND ASYLUM
Elspeth Guild & Paul Minderhoud
Martinus Nijhoff Publishers
More than a decade has passed since the appearance of the first issue of the European Journal of
Migration and Law, which was established to examine the intertwining of issues of law and migration in
the EU. This volume has been compiled to celebrate that anniversary. The journal itself is the basis for
the book: authors who have written the most significant contributions for the journal on the relevant
issues to the Area of Freedom Security and Justice (AFSJ) have revised and updated their articles in
light of current developments. These are supplemented with new chapters on issues which have turned
out to be particularly important to the development of the field. The success of the journal has
demonstrated the need for informed, independent academic research on the changing nature of
immigration and asylum in Europe, and this volume too seeks to meet that need. It offers a unique and
lively collection of essays covering the field of EU immigration and asylum law from a variety of
perspectives.
PERCEPTIONS OF EUROPE: A COMPARATIVE SOCIOLOGY OF EUROPEAN
ATTITUDES
Daniel Gaxie et al.
ECPR Press
Perceptions of Europe presents the main findings of a comparative qualitative survey conducted in
France, Germany, Italy, and Poland. Ordinary citizens from very different social backgrounds and
professions were asked a range of open-ended questions, allowing them to express themselves freely.
There have been few qualitative surveys on ordinary citizens views of European integration, and none
on this scale. The resulting picture is very different from the self-evident assumptions of many current
studies on European opinions. The book stresses the great diversity, ambiguity, and complexity of
European attitudes. It emphasises the causal impact of formal education, political interest and
involvement, individual everyday exposures to 'European' realities, and the role of collective national
experiences of European integration and national history.
