Compared to social class and to gender, ethnicity and racism have been much less researched as part
of developing an understanding of social aspects of health. Discussions and disagreements as to the
validity and reliability of concepts of ethnicity are ongoing, but the only identifiable consensus is
around the urgent need to remedy racialised disadvantage and the inadequacy of administrative
operationalisation of ethnic group. Despite a lack of consensus about how to conceptualise ethnicity
for research and service provision purposes, it is nonetheless becoming a key variable around which
competency of health and welfare service provision must be demonstrated.
This day meeting of experts in the field will address the following questions.
Is the field of ethnicity and health in a position to offer general guidance on conceptualising complex
individual and group identities for research and administration?
To what extent should research into ethnicity and health be shaped by the need to design effective
interventions?
To what extent is it possible for research into ethnicity and health to address the needs of service
providers?
Can technological innovations in medicine reduce rather than ratchet up the risk of racialised
injustice in health care?
The day will also offer an opportunity to hear about the recently established National Centre for Research in
Ethnicity and Mental Health, an exciting new development at Warwick Medical School.
