Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:

The National Geographic Society awards
grants for scientific field research and
exploration through its Committee for
Research and Exploration. All proposed
projects must have both a geographical
dimension and relevance to other scientific
fields and be of broad scientific interest.
Applications are generally limited to the
following disciplines: anthropology,
archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany,

AGRICULTURE
25-3 Agriculture and Food Research
Initiative: Food Safety (USDA)
This AFRI Challenge Area promotes and
enhances the scientific discipline of food
safety, with an overall aim of protecting
consumers from microbial and chemical
contaminants that may occur during all
stages of the food chain, from production
to consumption. This requires an understanding of the interdependencies of
human, animal, and ecosystem health as
it pertains to foodborne pathogens. The
long-term outcome for this program is to
reduce foodborne illnesses and deaths by
improving the safety of the food supply,
which will result in reduced impacts on
public health and on our economy. In
order to achieve this outcome, this program will support single function

25-9 Grants for Research and
Analysis on Energy (Energy
Foundation)
The Energy Foundation is a partnership of
major donors interested in solving the
world’s energy problems. The Foundation’s mission is to advance energy efficiency and renewable energy—new
technologies that are essential components of a clean energy future. The geographic focus is on the United States and
China, the largest and fastest growing
energy markets in the world. The Foundation’s primary role is as a grantmaker,
providing resources to the institutions that
most effectively leverage change. The following program areas are currently available: Power, Buildings, Transportation,
Climate, and the China Sustainable
Energy Program. (TGA 11/11)

25-10 Software Infrastructure for
Sustained Innovation (SI2) Grand
Challenges in the Chemical Sciences
(NSF)
Software is an integral enabler of computation, experiment and theory and a primary modality for realizing the NSF’s
vision for a Cyberinfrastructure Framework for 21st Century Science and Engineering (CIF21). Scientific discovery and
innovation are advancing along fundamentally new pathways opened by the
development of increasingly sophisticated
software. Software is also directly responsible for increased scientific productivity
and significant enhancement of researchers’ capabilities. In order to nurture,
accelerate and sustain this critical mode
of scientific progress, NSF established the
multi-tiered Software Infrastructure for
Sustained Innovation (SI2) program, with
the overarching goal of transforming
innovations in research and education into
sustained software resources that are an
integral part of the cyberinfrastructure.
Grand challenges in the chemical sciences
will be advanced through the provision of
enabling and sustainable software that
allows researchers to flexibly and rapidly
prototype and test new algorithms or
methods; leverage new heterogeneous
architectures; and explore new dataenabled scenarios. This SI2 solicitation is
for international software collaborations
addressing grand challenges in the chemical sciences, in partnership with the
EPSRC in the United Kingdom. NSF 12576

HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
25-11 Functions of Skeletal Muscle
beyond Contraction (R01) (NIH)
With this funding opportunity announcement, the National Institute of Arthritis
and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases
encourages applications for support of
innovative projects aimed at studying the
spectrum of activities of skeletal muscle
in health and disease that are beyond its
role in contraction and locomotion. These
activities include endocrine and paracrine
functions of skeletal muscle, resting muscle thermogenesis, sensing of biomechanical stimuli, storing amino acids,
regulating systemic metabolism, etc.
Advancing understanding of these important functions of muscle may lead to
novel strategies for the prevention or
treatment of common conditions such as
cachexia, obesity, diabetes and sarcopenia. PA-12-208 (NIHG 6/22/12)

25-12 Identifying Non-coding RNA
Targets for Early Detection of Cancer
(R01) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), encourages research
projects on non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs)
and their targets in preneoplastic lesions
and early stage cancers. This FOA also
encourages research projects to assess the
usefulness of stable microRNAs (miRNAs) and ncRNAs to predict progression
to cancer and as biomarkers for early cancer detection and screening. Building on
both basic and biomarker research on
microRNAs (miRNA), this FOA will further promote research on all classes of
ncRNAs and support the translation of
stable miRNAs into cancer screening or
diagnostic tests. PA-12-213 (NIHG 6/22/

SOCIAL SCIENCES
25-13 Biobehavioral Research Awards
for Innovative New Scientists
(BRAINS) (RO1) (NIH)
The Biobehavioral Research Awards for
Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS)
award is intended to support the research
and research career development of outstanding scientists who are in the early,
formative stages of their careers and who
plan to make a long term career commitment to research in specific mission areas
of the NIMH. This award seeks to assist
these individuals in launching an innovative clinical, translational, basic or services research program that holds the
potential to profoundly transform the
understanding, diagnosis, treatment, or
prevention of mental disorders. Each year
the BRAINS program will focus on a specific area of research and/or research
career development need. RFA-MH-13110 (NIHG 6/22/12)

25-14 Geography and Spatial Sciences
Program (GSS) (NSF)
The Geography and Spatial Sciences Program sponsors research on the geographic
distributions and interactions of human,
physical, and biotic systems on the
Earth’s surface. Investigations are encouraged to propose plans for research about
the nature, causes, and consequences of
human activity and natural environmental
processes across a range of scales.
Projects on a variety of topics (both
domestic and international) qualify for
support if they offer promise of contributing to scholarship by enhancing geographical knowledge, concepts, theories,
methods, and their application to societal
problems and concerns. GSS encourages
projects that explicitly integrate undergraduate and graduate education into the
overall research agenda. NSF 12-570
