AGRICULTURE
GENERAL
32-3 Agriculture and Food Research
Initiative: Food Safety (USDA)
32-1 Department of Defense
Multidisciplinary Research Program of
the University Research Initiative (DoD)
USDA/NIFA has made several modifications to the FY2012 AFRI Food Safety
Challenge Area RFA released on June
25, 2012. The FY 2012 RFA has now
been combined with the FY 2013 RFA
and funding amounts have been
increased. For the combined FY 2012/
2013 RFA, the new due date for letters of
intent will be September 17, 2012. The
new application due date will be December 5, 2012. This modification will allow
NIFA to meet the needs of the food
safety and related sciences research community by increasing the amount of
funds available, while enabling the program to establish a new timeline for the
release of future RFAs. This AFRI Challenge Area promotes and enhances the
scientific discipline of food safety, with
an overall aim of protecting consumers
from microbial and chemical contaminants that may occur during all stages of
the food chain, from production to consumption. This requires an understanding
of the interdependencies of human, animal, and ecosystem health as it pertains
to foodborne pathogens. The long-term
outcome for this program is to reduce
foodborne illnesses and deaths by
improving the safety of the food supply,
The MURI program supports basic
research in science and engineering at U.S.
institutions of higher education that is of
potential interest to DoD. The program is
focused on multidisciplinary research
efforts where more than one traditional
discipline interact to provide rapid
advances in scientific areas of interest to
the DoD. As defined by the DoD, basic
research is systematic study directed
toward greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts without
specific applications towards processes or
products in mind. It includes all scientific
study and experimentation directed toward
increasing fundamental knowledge and
understanding in those fields of the physical, engineering, environmental, and life
sciences related to long-term national
security needs. ONR-BAA-12-020 (GG 8/

32-8 CyberCorps: Scholarship for
Service (SFS) (NSF)
Cyberspace has transformed the daily
lives of people for the better. The rush to
adopt cyberspace, however, has exposed
its fragility and vulnerabilities: corporations, agencies, national infrastructure
and individuals have been victims of
cyber-attacks. The CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks proposals that address cybersecurity
education and workforce development.
The Scholarship Track provides funding
to award scholarships to students in
cybersecurity. In return for their scholarships, recipients will work after graduation for a Federal, State, Local, or Tribal
Government organization in a position
related to cybersecurity for a period equal
to the length of the scholarship. The
Capacity Track seeks innovative propos-
als leading to an increase in the ability of
the United States higher education enterprise to produce cybersecurity professionals. NSF 12-585

Circadian Clocks in Aging Tissues
(R01) (NIH)
This FOA issued by the National Institute
on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of
Health (NIH), solicits grant applications
from institutions/organizations that propose research to enhance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that
control circadian clocks in aging tissues.
This FOA encourages studies on the roles
of peripheral and extra suprachiasmatic
nucleus (SCN) circadian clocks during
aging. These studies include understanding the impact of alterations in the clock
system on chromatin remodeling, gene
expression, translation, signaling, and
function of individual cells. In addition,
studies are solicited on the pathophysiology of alterations to circadian clock regulation in aged tissues, with particular
attention to the response of the clock system to metabolic/nutritional, environmental and pharmacological challenges. RFAAG-13-007 (NIHG 8/17/12)
