18-2 Alcohol Education Project Grants
(R25) (NIH)
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse
and Alcoholism (NIAAA) supports
research programs to advance understanding of the biological and behavioral process involved in the development,

expression, and consequences of alcoholism and other alcohol-related problems.
The Institute also supports prevention,
treatment, and health services research
on alcohol abuse and alcoholism. A part
of the NIAAA mission is the dissemination of new knowledge acquired from
alcohol research to diverse audiences,
including scientists, educators, clinicians, and other health and social service
providers, patients and their families,
professionals within the criminal justice
system, and the general public. This

18-3 Virtual Reality Technologies for
Research and Education in Obesity
and Diabetes (R01) (NIH)
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA) is to encourage
submission of hypothesis-testing
research applications that capitalize on
the unique capabilities of Virtual Reality
(VR) technologies to visualize outcomes,
teach, motivate, and to extend the health
care and learning environments, in order
to foster desirable eating, physical activity, self-care, and other health-related
behaviors necessary for prevention and
management of obesity and diabetes. Of
highest interest are well-designed multidisciplinary projects drawing on expertise in VR technologies and biomedical
behavioral and pedagogical sciences.
The overall goal is to develop the potential of VR technologies as research tools
for behavioral science-oriented studies in
diabetes and obesity, and as practical
tools for clinical and public health-level
prevention and management of obesity

Program—National Integrated Food
Safety Initiative (NIFA)
”The purpose of the National Integrated
Food Safety Initiative is to support food
safety projects that demonstrate an integrated approach to solving problems in
applied food safety research, education,
or extension. Various models for integration of applied research, education, and
extension will be considered for funding.
Applications describing multi-institutional, multidisciplinary, and multifunc-
tional activities (and combinations
thereof) are encouraged. Applications are
strongly encouraged to address at least
two of the three functional areas of
research, education, and extension (i.e.,
research and extension, research and education, or extension and education).

This RFA solicits applications for the
Integrated Research, Education, and
Extension Competitive Grants Program,
Methyl Bromide Transitions (MBT). The
MBT seeks to solve critical agricultural
issues, priorities, or problems through the
integration of research, education, and
extension activities. It is designed to
address immediate needs that result from
the loss of availability of methyl bromide,
a pest and disease control tactic that has
been critical to agricultural, industrial,

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and
Development Center (ERDC) has issued a
Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for
various research and development topic
areas. The ERDC is responsible for conducting research in the broad fields of
hydraulics, dredging, coastal engineering, instrumentation, oceanography,
remote sensing, geotechnical engineering,
earthquake engineering, soil effects, vehicle mobility, self-contained munitions,
military engineering, geophysics, pavements, protective structures, aquatic
plants, water quality, dredged material,
treatment of hazardous waste, wetlands,
physical/mechanical/chemical properties
of snow and other frozen precipitation,
infrastructure and environmental issues

18-7 DOE EPSCoR Implementation
Grant Funding (EPSCoR)
The Department of Energy EPSCoR program has issued a call for proposals for
their Implementation Grant Program. As
you can see, there is a tight timeline in
place, but they were responding to the
continuing resolution issues. Only one
application per jurisdiction is allowed,
and a letter from the state director must
accompany the submission. The proposal
must be endorsed by James Guikema,
Interim DOE Kansas ESPCoR Director,
who has asked colleagues from KU and
WSU to assist in determining which proposal goes forward. If any group is interested, he needs to submit to Dr. Guikema
a letter of intent by May 23rd. Requests
must be $1-2.5 Million per year for 3
years (A renewal is possible for another 3
years.) Cost share is not required (but
without it, will probably not be fundable.)

18-8 Open Manufacturing (DARPA)
The vision of the Open Manufacturing
program is to reduce barriers to manufacturing innovation, speed, and affordability
of materials, components, and structures.
This will be achieved by 1) investing in
technologies to enable affordable, rapid,
adaptable, energy-efficient manufacturing
and fabrication processes, 2) promoting
comprehensive manufacturing design,
simulation and performance prediction
tools, and 3) facilitating exposure to low

The objectives of the Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) program
are to identify, develop, and (where
appropriate) demonstrate advanced information system technologies that: Reduce
the risk, cost, size, and development time
for Earth science space-based and
ground-based information systems,
Increase the accessibility and utility of
science data; and enable new observations
and information products. The AIST program is designed to bring information
system technologies to a Technology
Readiness Level (TRL) that allows integration into existing or future technology/

18-10 Division of Molecular and
Cellular Biosciences: Investigatorinitiated research projects (MCB)
(NSF)
The Division of Molecular and Cellular
Biosciences (MCB) supports fundamental
research and related activities designed to
promote understanding of complex living
systems at the molecular, subcellular, and
cellular levels. The Division is soliciting
proposals for hypothesis-driven and discovery research and related activities in
four core clusters: Biomolecular dynamics, structure, and function; Cellular processes; Genetic mechanisms; and
networks and regulation. The Division
supports research using a range of experimental approaches—including in vivo, in
vitro, and in silico strategies—and a
broad spectrum of model and non-model
organisms, especially microbes and
plants. Typical research in areas supported by MCB integrates theory and
experimentation. The Division gives high
priority to research projects that use theory, methods, and technologies from
physical sciences, mathematics, computational sciences, and engineering to

18-11 Kansas IDeA Network of
Biomedical Research Excellence (KINBRE) Major Starter Grants (KU/
NIH)
The mission of the NIH-funded Kansas
IdeA Network of Biomedical Research
Excellence (Kansas INBRE) grant is to
strengthen the ability of Kansas researchers to compete effectively for NIH funds
by building a critical mass of junior and
senior investigators as well as undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral
fellows. Within our scientific research
theme, Cell and Developmental Biology,
focus areas include reproductive and
embryonic development, organogenesis,
developmental neuroscience, and cellular
and developmental pathologies. We are
now seeking to identify three new faculty
to participate as Major Starter Grant
Recipients for the second 2.5 years of this
grant. With this message we solicit a one
page Letter of Intent from new investigators which summarize a 2.5 year research
plan that could be accomplished with an
approximate $100,00/year budget.

(STEP-UP) (R25) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) invites applications from institu-
tions to implement and evaluate the
NIDDK Short-Term Education Program
for Underrepresented Persons (STEPUP). STEP-UP is a national program
designed to provide ten to twelve weeks
of summer research education and training for high school and undergraduate
students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the NIDDK mission areas
including diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive,
liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic
