Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
30-1, 30-6) or by at least two months
prior to the sponsor deadline if you wish
to submit to a limited submission program. Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.k-state.edu/research/

GENERAL
30-1 Bridges to the Baccalaureate
Program (R25) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) issued by the National Institute of
General Medical Sciences (NIGMS),
National Institutes of Health (NIH),
encourages Research Education Grant
(R25) applications from institutions that
propose research education programs to
increase the pool of community college
students from underrepresented backgrounds who go on to research careers in
the biomedical and behavioral sciences
and will be available to participate in NIHfunded research. This initiative promotes
partnerships/consortia between community
colleges or other two-year post-secondary
educational institutions granting the associate degree with colleges or universities
that offer the baccalaureate degree. The
program expects that the joint efforts of
baccalaureate degree-granting and associate degree-granting institutions will foster
the development of a well-integrated institutional program that will provide students
from underrepresented groups with the
necessary academic preparation and skills
to enable their transition and successful
completion of the baccalaureate and subsequently more advanced degrees in biomed-
Vol. 20, No. 30
ical and behavioral sciences. Only one
application per institution (normally
identified by having a unique DUNS
number or NIH IPF number) is allowed.

ARTS & HUMANITIES
30-3 Fellowships (NHC)
The National Humanities Center offers
residential fellowships for advanced
study in the humanities during the academic year, September 2012 through
May 2013. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials.
Young scholars as well as senior scholars
are encouraged to apply, but they must
have a record of publication, and recent
Ph.D.s should be aware that the Center
does not support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. In addition to scholars
from all fields of the humanities, the center accepts individuals from the natural
and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in
humanistic projects. The Center is also
international and gladly accepts applications from scholars outside the United
States. (TGA 10/11)

30-4 Fellowships for Creative and
Performing Artists and Writers (AAS)
The American Antiquarian Society, a
national research library and learned
society of American history and culture,
is calling for applications for visiting fellowships for historical research by creative and performing artists, writers, film
makers, journalists, and other persons
whose goals are to produce imaginative,
non formulaic works dealing with pretwentieth century American history. Successful applicants are those whose work
is for the general public rather than for

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS
& PHYSICAL SCIENCE
30-6 Microsoft Research Faculty
Fellowship Program (Microsoft)
Microsoft Research seeks nominees who
are advancing computing research in
novel directions with the potential for
high impact on the state of the art, and
who demonstrate the likelihood of
becoming thought leaders in the field.
Because new faculty are so vital to the
future of academic computer science, the
Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship
Program identifies, recognizes, and supports exceptional new faculty members
engaged in innovative computing
research. The objective of this program is
to stimulate and support creative research
undertaken by promising researchers who
have the potential to make a profound
impact on the field of computing in their
research disciplines. Nominees must be
nominated by their research institution,
and their nominations must be confirmed
by a letter from the head of the institution
(for example, office of the Provost, ProVice Chancellor, President, and so on).
Direct applications from new faculty
members are not accepted. Nominees
must be new faculty members in the first,
second, or third year of their first tenuretrack faculty appointment. No more than
one nomination from each research institution will be accepted.

30-7 Interfacial Processes and
Thermodynamics (NSF)
The Interfacial Processes and Thermodynamics (IPT) program supports fundamental research in engineering areas
related to: interfacial phenomena; mass
transport phenomena; and molecular thermodynamics. Currently, emphasis is
placed on molecular engineering
approaches at interfaces, especially as
applied to the nano-processing of soft
materials. PD-12-1414 (GG 6/8/11)

30-8 Biophotonics (NSF)
Biophotonics applies photonics technology to the fields of medicine, biology and
biotechnology. Basic research and innovation in photonics that is very fundamental in science and engineering is needed to
lay the foundation for new technologies
beyond those that are mature and ready
for application in medical diagnostics and
therapies. Advances are needed in nanophotonics, optogenetics, contrast and targeting agents, ultra-thin probes, wide
field imaging, and rapid biomarker
screening. Low cost and minimally invasive medical diagnostics and therapies are
key goals. PD-12-7236 (GG 6/8/11)

30-9 Health Promotion for Children
with Physical Disabilities Through
Physical Activity and Diet: Developing
An Evidence Base (R21) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) encourages Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) applications
that will improve our understanding of
how patterns of physical activity and
dietary choice affect the health and fitness
of children with physical disabilities. Proposed research should account for the
functional limitations of children with
disabilities and their nutritional needs, as
well as the physiological, psychosocial,
and environmental factors that play a role
in determining the health of this population. A companion FOA is PAR-11-288,

30-11 Science of Organizations (SoO)
(NSF)
Organizations—private and public, established and entrepreneurial, designed and
emergent, formal and informal, profit and
non profit—are critical to the well-being
of nations and their citizens. They are of
crucial importance for producing goods
and services, creating value, providing
jobs, and achieving social goals. The Science of Organizations program funds
basic research that yields a scientific evidence base for improving the design and
emergence, development and deployment, and management and ultimate
effectiveness of organizations of all kinds.
SoO funds research that advances our
fundamental understanding of how organizations develop, form and operate. Successful SoO research proposals use
scientific methods to develop and refine
theories, to empirically test theories and
frameworks, and to develop new measures and methods. Funded research is
aimed at yielding generalizable insights
that are of value to the business practitioner, policy-maker and research communities. PD 11-8031
