sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim

28-1 Center for Advanced Study in the
Visual Arts Visiting Senior Fellowship
Program (NGA)
The Center for Advanced Study in the
Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art
announces its program for Paul Mellon
and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior
Fellowships. Fellowships are for full-time
research, and scholars are expected to
reside in Washington, D.C., and to participate in the activities of the center throughout the fellowship period. Applications
will be considered for research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts
(painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, prints and
drawings, film photography, decorative
arts, industrial design, and other arts) of
any geographical area and of any period.
Applications are also solicited from scholars in other disciplines whose work examines artifacts or has implications for the
analysis and criticism of visual form.

28-2 National Technical Assistance,
Training, Research and Evaluation:
Regional Training Curriculum
Implementation (DOC)
Recent studies on economic development,
including several EDA-funded reports,
Vol. 16, No. 28
stress the importance of a regional
approach to successful economic development. However, the actual implementation of economic development from the
regional perspective is not robust. Therefore, in FY 2006, EDA funded the development of a practitioner-oriented
curriculum to acquaint local economic
development practitioners with the benefits, process, and practice of economic
regionalism. Through this competitive
solicitation, EDA now solicits applications for the nationwide delivery of this
curriculum. Applicants should describe
the number of training sessions (workshops) contemplated, the methods by
which appropriate participants will be
identified, and what, if any, certification
or other credential will be awarded to
participants who successfully complete

28-3 National Technical Assistance,
Training, Research and Evaluation
Program: Economic Development
Research Projects (DOC)
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is soliciting applications for
FY 2007 National Technical Assistance,
Training, Research and Evaluation program (NTA Program) funding. EDA
solicits applications for funding that
addresses one or more of the following
four research projects: 1) Rural economic
development policy; 2) business incubators; 3) 21st century regionalism; and 4)
private sector community investment.
EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness,
preparing American regions for growth
and success in the worldwide economy.
Through its NTA Program, EDA works
towards fulfilling its mission by funding
research and technical assistance projects
to promote competitiveness and innovation in rural and urban regions throughout the United States and its territories.
By working in conjunction with its
research partners, EDA will help States,
local governments and community-based
organizations to achieve their highest

The Office of Fusion Energy Sciences of
the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its
interest in receiving grant applications
for support under its Plasma Physics Junior Faculty Award Program. Applications
should be from tenure-track faculty investigators and should be submitted through
a U.S. academic institution. The purpose
of this program is to support the development of the individual research programs
of exceptionally talented researchers early

28-5 Young Children with Mild to
Severe Hearing Loss (R01) (HHS)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) issued by the National Institute of
Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) encourages research
applications from institutions/organizations addressing research needs on the
young child (infants and children) with
mild to severe hearing loss. Development,
refinement or modification of measurement tools for young children with hearing loss is also encouraged. This FOA
will utilize the NIH Research Project
Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs
in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-400, that encourages

28-6 Research Experience for
Teachers (RET): Supplement
Opportunity (NSF)
National Science Foundation will fund
activities that will enable K-12 science
educators to participate in projects funded
by the Directorate for Biological Sciences
(BIO) at the National Science Foundation
(NSF). The goal of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) activity is to
enhance the professional development of
K-12 science educators through research
experience at the emerging frontiers of
science in order to bring new knowledge
into the classroom. BIO strongly encourages all its grantees to make special
efforts to identify talented teachers who
can participate in this RET supplement
activity to integrate research and education. A RET can be requested as a supplement to an existing NSF award or as part
of a new or renewal NSF proposal. NSF

The overall purpose of the NIAAA Alcohol Research Center program is to provide leadership in conducting and
fostering interdisciplinary, collaborative
research on a wide variety of topics relevant to the Institutes mission. These topics include, but are not limited to: the
nature, etiology, genetics, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of alcohol use disorders and their biomedical, psychosocial,
and economic consequences across the
lifespan. Centers are also major contributors to the development of new research
methods, technologies and approaches
that sustain innovative goal-directed
research. This RFA uses the Exploratory/
Developmental Alcohol Research Center
(P20) mechanism to provide support for a
group of research to create a cohesive,
interdisciplinary team focused on a significant alcohol research theme and to assist
them in establishing the necessary collaborations, facilities and research projects to
justify a subsequent application for a Specialized (P50) or a Comprehensive (P60)

The overall purpose of the NIAAA Alcohol Research Center program is to provide leadership in conducting and

28-9 Ecology and Oceanography of
Harmful Algal Blooms (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to
Achieve Results (STAR) program, and its
interagency partners, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administra-
tion (NOAA) and the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA), are seeking applications proposing targeted research projects of up to 3
years duration and multi-disciplinary
regional studies for 3 to 5 years duration
for the Ecology and Oceanography of
Harmful Algal Blooms (ECOHAB) program. This NOAA- led program provides
support for research on algal species
whose populations may cause or result in
deleterious effects on ecosystems and
human health. Studies of the causes of
such blooms, their detection, effects, mitigation, and control in U.S. coastal waters
(including estuaries and Great Lakes) are

28-13 Research on the Reduction and
Prevention of Suicidality (R01) (NIH)
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA) is to invite grant
applications for research that will reduce
the burden of suicidality (deaths,
attempts, and ideation). The intent is to
intensify investigator-initiated research
on the topic, to attract new investigators
to the field, and increase interdisciplinary
approaches to developing effective strategies to reduce suicidality. This FOA will
use the NIH Research Project Grant
(R01), but applications for the Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21); the
Small Research Grant (R03), and the

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation works with partners to advance entrepreneurship in America. During the 20072008 academic year, the Kauffman Foundation will award up to 15 Dissertation
Fellowship grants to Ph.D., D.B.A., or
other doctoral students for the support of
dissertations in the area of entrepreneurship. Recipients may use the grant to pay
for costs associated with their dissertation, including data collections and analysis, databases, specialized hardware/
software, and travel.
