We offer rich resources for learning and teaching, with a full programme of
events for schools, CPD opportunities, outreach resources, online access and
plenty of support for self-led class visits.
Our collections cover archaeology, Scottish history, technology, design, art,
fashion and science, giving you a wide range of opportunities for enriching your
pupils’ learning across the curriculum.
What do we offer to schools?
• Free admission to all booked school groups
• Free object handling sessions (Teacher led)
• Workshops and events
• Preview and events for teachers
• Bookable lunch and/or cloak rooms at each museum
• Interactive resources and learning materials that you
can access online at www.nms.ac.uk
• Museum on the Move: bringing resources to schools
around Scotland. See page 24 for details.
2008–2009 will be an exciting year for National Museums Scotland with major
changes to several of our museums, including the beginning of a £46.4m project
at our flagship site – a three-year project to transform the Royal Museum
building into a museum for the 21st-century.
More information on this project can be found on our website
www.nms.ac.uk/royalmuseumproject
We look forward to your visit!

Flying high…
What better place to bring the past to life, or to examine the future of technology? Step right back into the past
at Britain’s best preserved Second World War airfield, home to a unique collection of civil and military aircraft that
chronicle the story of flight and demonstrate Scotland’s role in it.
• A new interactive flight exhibition will open mid 2009. Examine how and why things fly, with interactive
displays demonstrating the mechanics of flight.
• East Fortune Airfield has been designated a historic scheduled ancient monument. A new exhibition
examining the history of the airfield and the role it played in both World Wars will open mid 2009. The
exhibition will reveal the history of the site, from First World War airships to a collection of objects and
artefacts detailing the story of the men and women based at this RAF airfield.
• Get up close to our amazing aircraft, and join the jet-set when you board Concorde as part of our Supersonic
Streamlining workshop.* Free activity boxes let your class explore flight and traditional games in our open
spaces. A free art cart can be booked in advance of your visit – enquire when booking.

A century of style!
From strait-laced Victorian dress to wartime Utility wear, put your pupils in the shoes of the people who wore the trends
of their time. What was life like for a Victorian servant or a school child? Find out first hand when you step back in time at
Shambellie House.
• Have fun with our Victorian games – including croquet, whips and peeries, gird and cleeks.
• Travel through ten decades of style and learn about the original family of 19th-century Shambellie
House. From dining room to drawing room, bedroom to nursery, each room captures a different
memory and moment in time.
• All around the house are the woods of the Shambellie estate. Pick up a trail and explore the grounds.
There’s plenty of outdoors space for a class picnic or some old-fashioned games!

A force to be reckoned with?
Within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, discover the impact of war on Scotland’s history, identity and reputation abroad.
Why did so many Scots join forces and for what reasons – clan, country or money? How did the First and Second World
Wars change Scotland’s economy? What social changes did war introduce for women? Relive the dark days of the
World Wars through personal letters and mementoes, as well as military equipment. Uncover stories of courage and
determination, victory and defeat, heroics and heartache.
• Visit the Call to Arms exhibition (until Sun 1 Feb 2009) and explore the history, tactics and weapons of
Scottish infantry, from 14th-century Galloglass mercenaries and 17th-century Highland warriors to today’s
modern soldiers. See examples of modern infantry weapons and get to grips with replica swords and
armour in the hands-on section.
• Our Education Room evokes the atmosphere of a 1940s tenement, where your pupils
can meet characters from wartime Scotland.
• Follow the First and Second World War trails around the Museum.

What relationship did the
Romans really have with
Scottish communities? How
did the Vikings trade with
the locals? This guided tour
for teachers will explore the
themes in our Early People
gallery and uncover things you
never knew about the early
settlers here in Scotland. This
is a fantastic opportunity to
meet museum staff and find
out about our new resources for
schools.
Do you want to know more
about how to make science
exciting? Come and experience

This year the showcase will
include a preview of the new
interactive flight science
exhibition.
In 2009 the National Museum
of Flight launches two new
exhibitions at Easter. The first
looks at the history of East
Fortune; its role in both World
Wars and the experiences
of individuals. The second
exhibition is an interactive
flight science gallery which
will allow pupils to discover
the technology behind our
collections. Check our website
www.nms.ac.uk/flight for
details.
Scotland: A Changing Nation is a
new permanent gallery looking
at the events and industries
that have shaped the people of
Scotland. At work, home, in play,
in times of crisis and adversity,
the gallery traces the fortunes
of those living and working in
Scotland from the First World War
to the present day. Come along
and enjoy an introduction to the
gallery and find out about some
exciting events for pupils!

Museum on the Move!
The Picts, Romans and Ancient Egyptians are
coming to you!
To find out more about the resources available
in your area contact:
Launched in 2007 and in partnership with
museums across Scotland, National Museums
Scotland created Museum on the Move; a new
series of handling resources for use in your
classroom or at your local museum.

Museum on the Move is bigger than a handling
box: it’s almost a mini touring exhibition. Each
resource comes in 3-4 crates, containing replica
objects and activities. Through hands-on learning,
each Museum on the Move resource delivers key
information about these peoples and their lives.
Examine life in Ancient Egypt, uncover the Picts
and discover why the Romans came to Scotland.
There are key messages and common themes
across all the resources, including timelines, maps
and dressing up activities. There is something to
make and keep, or take home, too.
Museum on the Move can be visited and used at
your local museum, or you can borrow it for use
in your school. Ask your local museum for more
information.
