Mandarin Syllabus C
Prerequisite for entry
Successful completion of Mandarin Syllabus B at the UCL CLIE or a similar course and have experience of dealing with
relevant authentic material.
Course duration
Year 1 students: double-block (16 x 3-hour classes. Block 1: 8 x 3-hour classes; Block 2: workshops and tutorials related
to Project).
Year 2 students: single block (8 x 3-hour classes).
Self-Study
40 hours in total.

Aims and Objectives
The course covers additional Chinese characters together with more vocabulary, grammar, morphology, syntax and
phonetics, and develops the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to enable students to communicate in
specific situations within a Mandarin-speaking environment. Students will be able to converse reasonably fluently with
native speakers and discuss personal, practical, social and some current issues using appropriate structures. Some
medical related issues/vocabulary will also be covered.
The course will enhance knowledge and use of linguistic structures (a variety of styles and registers from a range of
appropriate authentic material). Various transferable skills will also be further developed.










Talking about Tai Chi in Chinese Medicine;
An introduction to Chinese Medicine
Making and responding to requests ;
Asking and answering questions about rules and signs;
Asking for and giving recommendations;
Bargaining/ asking for suggestions;
Talking about a place of natural beauty through comparison;
Describing one’s appearance/ personalities ;
Asking and giving reasons.
Linguistic Structures


Expression possession, exi9stence or location with 有;
Complements expressing result;











Expression passive voice suing 被;
Expression a continuing action or state with 着;
是 …. 的 constructions;
Giving instruction using imperatives;
把 sentences;
Duplication of verbs;
Expressing result of an action with 到;
Serial verb constructions ;
Affirmative-negative questions;
The auxiliary words;
Wh-questions.
