Answer ALL THREE questions in the following pages. 1. 2. You have a group of UPPER INTERMEDIATE learners who need to revise and practise the -ing form and the infinitive. You decide to use the enclosed reading material as the basis for your lesson. There are twelve learners in the class and the lesson is sixty minutes. a. Provide a rationale for how you would you use the material to revise this language area and to give oral and written practice. b. Outline your assumptions about what the learners would already know. c. State the problems that you anticipate the learners could have in the lesson and provide appropriate solutions to these problems. d. Write a lesson plan which describes your procedures and aims for each stage. (30 points) What are the similarities and differences between the meaning, form and pronunciation of the two sentences below? Outline a total of SEVEN ideas to help learners to understand these similarities and differences. Provide an example for each of your ideas. (10 points) TURN OVER TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: LCTE7900 Language to go, Lesson 13 Upper Intermediate Why Britain suffers a kissing crisis It’s a dilemma for every British socialite – do you kiss the host or shake hands? One in four Britons fails to see the point of social kissing and continues to think it is embarrassing. Sixty per cent would choose to just shake hands, and one in three thinks that social kissing is about ‘pretending’ to be friendly. Just one in ten Britons positively approve of kissing a new acquaintance; many see it as ‘un-British’ and avoid touching at all if possible. Fifty-one per cent of us suggest kissing women is OK , but admit being suspicious of kissing between men, and most people would attempt to pull away if someone they did not know well tried to kiss them. They would also refuse to return an unexpected or unwanted kiss. As you might expect to find, in close relationships nearly all of us kiss our relatives and 80 per cent of us manage to kiss our closest friends. But, according to psychologist Oliver James, when we British kiss virtual strangers, it has nothing to do with wanting to spread a little happiness, and rarely has the genuine warmth of the Italians or the Spanish. In fact, people actually resent having to put up with physical contact. ‘When we go around kissing people we don’t know very well, we’re really just desperately attempting to get close.
