To you it’s just a cold sore, but to a baby it could mean life or death. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). While most adults carry the virus without any health risks, it can cause a potentially fatal illness in babies, particularly in the first six weeks of life. The illness can be contracted through physical contact, such as kissing a newborn near their eyes, nose, ears or mouths; or transmitted during labour. The NHS recommends that anyone with a cold sore or symptoms of an impending outbreak should avoid kissing or having any contact with a baby.
