For complete beginners or those who have had only very little contact with the language.
20 x 2-hour classes.
80 hours in total.
LCSP6001, LCSPG001, LCSPM001, LCSP6012, LCSPG012 (together with Spanish syllabus B).
The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a basic everyday survival level (basic vocabulary, grammar, morphology, syntax and phonetics). Students should be able to communicate in and understand Spanish on a number of practical everyday matters. Cultural awareness will be developed. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material, will be enhanced. Some transferable skills will also be covered.
greetings, introductions and socialising; talking about your family, physical and character descriptions of people; describing objects and places; expressing likes and dislikes; talking about your area and neighbourhood; talking about the weather; talking about habitual actions, daily routine; asking and giving information about work and means of transport; plans for the future; talking about the recent past; talking about food and clothes.
Main topics/themes to be covered
introductions: names, surnames, the family;
numbers, colours, money and shopping;
public buildings, the house;
time, days of the week, months and seasons;
regions and cities;
everyday life, work and studies;
food and drink;
travelling, tourist information; talking about recent events.
Phonetics
the sounds of Spanish (vowels, diphthongs, consonants);
stress;
basic intonation patterns;
basic spelling.
Morphology
gender and number;
possessive, qualitative and indefinite adjectives;
introduction to the personal pronouns: subject, direct and indirect objects, prepositional, reflexive;
adverbs and prepositions;
comparatives;
present tense (regular and irregular);
periphrastic future (ir a + infinitive);
present perfect tense (regular and irregular past participle).
Syntax
affirmative, negative and interrogative forms;
gender and number agreement;
frequency: siempre, algunas veces, a menudo, nunca, (casi todos los días, una hora al día);
conjunctions;
ser/estar;
hay/está;
gustar;
querer + infinitive; poder + infinitive; decir/creer (present) + que;
tener que + infinitive;
empezar a + infinitive;
tardar en + infinitive.
