UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Course Units 2015-2016 Spanish Syllabus C Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Spanish Syllabus B at the UCL CLIE or a similar course and have experience of dealing with relevant authentic material. Course duration 20 x 2-hour classes. Self-Study 80 hours in total. Course codes LCSP6003, LCSPG003, LCSPM003, LCSP6023, LCSPG023, LCSPM023 (together with Spanish syllabus B), LCSP6034, LCSPG034 (together with Spanish syllabus D). Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students with a good basic knowledge of Spanish to develop the four skills further. Students should then be able to communicate in most situations within the Hispanic world. Students will be able to converse reasonably fluently with native speakers and discuss personal, social and current issues using appropriate structures. Cultural awareness will be further developed. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach authentic material, will be enhanced. Some transferable skills will also be covered. Functions describing and comparing countries, people, objects, habits; arguing (discussing solutions for conflicts, objecting, etc.); organising ideas; giving directions, instructions and advice; summarising; identifying objects: by their owner, their position, etc; narrating and dating events; discussing past habits; expressing and describing feelings: interest, surprise, amusement, sadness, anger, pain; expressing intentions; finding out and checking information, enquiring; repeating or reporting the words or wishes of others; writing e-mails. Course Content Main topics/themes to be covered Spanish and Latin American linguistic variety, culture and history; Anecdotes and memories; progress and the future; communications: the phone, the post, the media, advertising; gastronomy; environment; health; personal relationships. Linguistic Structures Phonetics problematic consonant sounds: p/t/k, r/rr, h; difficulties involving spelling. Morphology personal pronouns: subject, direct and indirect objects, prepositional, reflexive; pronouns (mío, tuyo, suyo - with and without the article); quantitative pronouns and adverbs; relative pronouns and adverbs; the imperative (affirmative and negative) with pronouns; the future; the indefinite; the pluperfect; the conditional; the present subjunctive; revision of the past tenses. Syntax the infinitive as a noun; quantifiers followed by singular or plural: todo el mundo, muchos; article + adjective or prepositional clause: el rojo, el de arriba; impersonal se; prepositions: por/para, desde/por/hasta, etc.; por/porque, and the use of prepositions alone before nouns, but prepositions + que before clauses; time: hace/desde hace/llevo/al cabo de/ya no; conjunctions; ser/estar; use of the past tenses: perfect/indefinite vs. imperfect; the indirect speech discourse: change of time/space references, use of mood and tenses; use of the subjunctive: - in temporal clauses expressing future: antes de que..., cuando...; - with impersonal expressions: es difícil que..., es extraño que...; - in clauses expressing commands, advice, wish, will and need: esperar que..., necesitar que...; when preceded by an indirect object pronoun: aconsejar que..., decir que...; with "ojalá"; - after negative clauses: no creer que..., no comprender que...; - in idiomatic expressions with "que": ¡que aproveche!, ¡que descanses!
